I can't believe that someone thought it was insightful, informative, or underrated. It seems pretty clear to me that instead of attempting to post something insightful or informatice, he was looking for that elusive fist p0st. He did get #3, but I'm sure he'll be back another day for another try. The only explanation I can come up with to explain the moderation is some kind of conspiracy. I hope it gets corrected in M2.

I didn't really make the connection that you were intending this to focus almost entirely on text based messages. In fact, if I was still unable to contact you this evening, I was thinking of hacking up adfu to serve something like what you're talking about.

If you're still looking for willing victim^H^H^H^H^H participants, I'd love to try it out on dynodns.net. I sent you a mail, but it's still sitting in my mqueue waiting for an MX record for infamous.net. ;)

While this project sounds pretty neat, I'm not too sure how different it is than just a banner ad service that caters to "the little guy". I'm Here's what the site says is different:

Anyone - not just those with something to sell - can become a sponsor of your site in minutes.
I think that's true for regular banner ads, too, isn't it?

Sponsors can choose the amount of their contribution, attracting many smaller contributions (it's probably easier to find ten people willing to contribute $5 each that one person willing to contribute $50).
This may be true. I'm curious as hell to see. I'm not sure how small of a block of ads you can buy from most banner companies.

Can easily be used to allow donors to sponsor non-internet activities via your website. (For example, a high school marching band might set up a sponsorpool on a website to let the community fund their new uniforms.)
    Just like banner ads, right?

Much less annoying than banner ads.
In what way? seriously, I'm not too sure that this wouldn't just be a bunch of banner ads.

I don't mean to tear the project apart. I'd really love to see it work. I'm just concerned that there's not much difference between this and regular banner ads.

Do you see much of a difference? Does this look like a viable alternative?

I guess if it gets hyped up on slashdot, I can look forward to banner ads featuring Natalie Portman and a pantful of hot grits.

He seems to imply there that the term "downtime" used to mean time spent relaxing, but recently people have begun to use it to describe computer problems. I'd wager that the term was more commonly used to refer to computer problems in the past and has only recently begun to be used to refer to relaxing.

The patent doesn't describe a way to email people ads, it describes a way providers (like Juno) can make you see ads when you're using their email client, but don't have connectivity. It pretty much grabs a tarball of ads when it can and them shows them to you whenever their client is running.

I understand that many people consider that spam as well, but that kind of spam is at least controlled more easily.

Here's the abstract of the patent:

A system for providing scheduled messages to a remote user in a batch oriented system. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a user creates and/or reads electronic mail locally. While the user creates the electronic mail, a message is displayed to the user on a portion of the local monitor, the message preferably changing in accordance with a local display schedule and stored on a local storage device. The message is preferably targeted to the particular user. When the user is ready to transmit the e-mail created and/or receive e-mail addressed to him, the user's local client establishes a connection via a modem with a remote e-mail server system. The remote e-mail server system not only receives the e-mail transmitted by the user and/or transmits e-mail addressed to the user, but also updates the user's local messages in accordance with a distribution schedule. After the e-mail and message updates are transmitted, the user's local client computer is disconnected from the remote e-mail server system.

By the way, I wonder why they included via a modem in there. It seems like an unnecessary limitation.

I believe that technically we could combine all sorts of devices into one, but I believe that that is not entirely desireable to consumers for two reasons.

First, the "other device" embedded into something is never as good as it could have been. The wristwatch that also has a pager in it is never a very good pager. The quality drops in phyisical objects just as it does in software. The mail client that is bundled in your browser is not a ver good mail client. The browser bundled in your MP3 player is not a very good browser. In that same sense, your PDA, pager, camera and phone bundle will not have the quality in some of the components that you desire.

Secondly, bundling products forces some consumers to buy things they don't want. If I have no use for a camera, then I'd rather not buy one when I buy my phone. Even if I did buy it, I'd hate to carry my phone, camera, PDA along with my pager everywhere I carry it.

Come to think of it, are people really going to give up the "utility belt" look that has sprung up recently? (It has replaced the pocket protector as the easiest way to spot a geek in a crowd.)
