Should the government step in? Should academia step in, by way of government funds?
I sure hope not the US government. You see, I don't believe that that is the purpose of the federal government. I seem to recall someting about:
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.
Now when I ask for my refund on windows, won't it be easy to verify that I've never used that installation and am entitled to the refund? Or perhaps it's already activated by the OEM when they installed windows.
...keeping a fleet of shuttles in existance which were built before the pilots were born.
The first shuttle was built in 1976. That would make it about 25 years old. The ones flying now are a bit younger and are updated dramaticly between each mission.
I haven't been able to find a shuttle pilot in their 20's. Most are about 35 or 40, it seems. Which ones are you referring to as being younger than the shuttles they fly?
The crew over at trolltalk must be laughing their asses off right about now. adbe got this obvious of a troll accepted as a story for chrissake. What other explanation is there for popping that little unrelated, inflamatory remark about taxes onto the end of this story?
I cannot stress this enough, people: Read the articles linked to from the story before posting.
The article lists about 9 websites that provide various types of this service. If you just can't read the article, then you might find some listed here or here.
I found reading the affidavit quite interesting. I can't find many more docs like it around. Anyone have any links to more documents on this case which are as detailed, thorough, or interesting?
you can try the postscript doc at http://dotslash.dynodns.net/01/02/22/0622249/. I just used acroread to make it and haven't tried to view it. 'file' claims that it's postscript at least.
I agree wholeheartedly. We should make a thereal.slashdot.org and put stuff like this on there. Then you and I could read it. We would keep stuff like this off of slashdot.org and just put stuff that we wanted the media to pick up on there. That way we could get the real stuff and they would only be able to see the stuff that you think is necessary to tell them. I hope they don't catch on and start reading thereal.slashdot.org!
This hardly seems statistically enough to infer what she inferred so I wouldn't call it a complete science
project.
This stands apart from most science fair projects I have heard of because she had a sample of data and she attempted to draw conclusions from it. This was a valid attempt at using what kids are taught as the "scientific method". It sounds to me like it was a pretty good elementary science experiment for an elementary school student.
I would rather see this experiment than the demonstration of a vinegar and baking soda volcano any day.
That's why today's astronomy picture of the day features Robdrt Goddard and one of his funky looking rockets.

I'm not an MBA either; perhaps that's why I occasionally buy bottled water.

Do you have any idea what kind of money you would have now if you had put that 6 months salery into, say, the S&P500 15 years ago?

Not to disagree with your point, but you are hiding something. If encrypting something did not hide the contents, why would anyone do it?
I believe that I agree with your stance, though. There's nothing wrong with hiding stuff.

Maybe you should ask dangifiknow.com. It always gives an answer.

Apparently no one would: nappyoldladies.com is still not registered.

Personally, I believe emacs is still the best choice of an editor, IDE, and all the other stuff you need in this situation.

In Euclidian geometry.
What if the entity with which you are trying to communicate is from Hyperbolic space, or some space with taxicab geometry? Then you're really screwed.
