  1. Uh, why would they call the "neural nets" if they didn't work like human brains worked??? Plus they are "deep learning" so they learn at a deeper level.

  2. You are missing the point. Since we can create AI programs that can play Go and Chess, we will soon have AI systems that can replace doctors, lawyers and everything in between. It is inevitable, especially with computers getting faster and faster every year.

  3. I am sorry to hear about your friend, but he needs to realize that progress is inevitable. Once they created a chess playing AI, we should have realized that it was only a matter of time before Go AI and poker AIs were created. And then of course AI will be created to replace doctors, lawyers and people who clean bathrooms and stuff. And yes: ATM and vending machines are a form of AI. How else would they work?

You are right. You can replace a doctor with a computer that has photographic memory. Good thing doctors have an ironclad professional organization that prevents this happening. I just wish we all had such luck.

  5. That is what I am thinking too. Once they have voice input on the kiosks there will be no reason to have people at McDonalds. And Amazon will be delivering packages via automated trucks and drones soon too. They just have to figure out how to get the package up the steps to the house, but once they do they will be ready to get rid of delivery drivers!

  6. It has already happened. With deep learning neural networks which think like the human brain, we already have systems that can replace a large swath of professions. Go ask a Go or Chess master how many job offers they get nowadays!

  7. There might not be what you can "general AI" yet, but we do have computers that can beat the best "Go" masters on the planet. Also, with deep learning neural networks we are exploring how the human brain really works, so general AI is inevitable.

  8. "AI" is things like Siri, playing Go and Chess and deep learning neural networks (like artificial human brains). I am thinking automation is things like kiosks at McDonalds and stuff like that. I guess that could be considered AI too though!

  9. But I think we could cut costs on the $200,000 fuel bill by launching the Falcon 9 from space, instead of a rock stuck in a gravity well like Earth. You could even create the fuel itself in space, which would eliminate the cost for launching the fuel. Remember, every pound that can be saved during launch is a huge win in terms of costs.

  10. Yes! Think of the labor saved from switching from a drafting table to a 3D CAD tool. That was a major portion of the $25 billion it took to build the Saturn V launch system.

  11. Agreed. It is much easier to assemble things in orbit rather then assembling them on Earth. You can even skip that launch step by constructing them in orbit as well, in a space factory!

  12. Right. It only cost about $25 billion in the 1960s to go to the moon. We could do it for about $200 million today. After all, my watch has as much processing power as the Saturn V launch computer!

You are right! But if I close my eyes and wish really hard I will see myself living on Mars! It is really going to happen..finally! I am leaving this rock stuck in this gravity well forever! So long suckers - enjoy your rock!

  14. But 57% of those will be women.

  15. AI will also be coming for our jobs too. In fact, AI is already here and is eliminating entire categories of jobs.

  16. But Windows 10 came out and it was the best version of Windows ever. And also Intel introduced CPU's which were up to 5% faster than the previous ones. So we are making good progress. Progress is inevitable.

  17. Not possible...Moore's Law is guaranteed to continue forever.

  18. Yes, Chrome is all about freedom!

  19. Yes they would be much better off with an Android, Chromebook or an IOS device. Those would never have those issues.

  20. Wow, by 2018 computers will be even faster. Therefore it will be a lot easier by then!

  21. Re:By "really close" you mean 20 years out on Google's $20 Million Race To the Moon Will End With No Winner -- and Google is OK With That (cnbc.com) · · Score: 0

Nah. We just need to build a few space factories and then mine asteroids and fill the interplanetary spaceships hull with asteroid dust to protect from the radiation.

  22. But my computer used to only have 8K of RAM and now it has 16GB.

  23. Re:Shouldn't this be easy? on Google's $20 Million Race To the Moon Will End With No Winner -- and Google is OK With That (cnbc.com) · · Score: 2, Funny

Yes but in the 1960s microprocessors were very slow. Today the processor in my phone is much much more powerful and has more memory then all of the Saturn era launch computers combined. Therefore it must be that much easier and cheaper to go to the Moon today.

  24. That is kind of a surprise. I mean we are really close to having a manned mission to Mars. I guess Musk was concentrating on that, and didn't think the Moon was worth it. Once we have our space factories up and running and mining asteroids we will be in good shape for Mars...or beyond?

  25. Yes we are. We can now launch satellites into LEO. Truly the dawn of a new age.
