Call a "switchboard operator"? "patched through" to your desk? What is this, 1946? The mid/highclass hookers aren't asking their customers for identification. Who writes this garbage?
Of course that is possible. It is just a technical issue solved by software. Just like you can't provision a cable modem in your house without authorization from the upstream ISP. The ISPs could just declare that you need to use "authorized" cable modems to connect to the Internet and reject all non-authorized one. This is coming already.
You wouldn't need to re-engineer the entire internet, just the edges. it is definitely doable, and eventually it will be done I believe. The excuse will be child porn/terrorism/piracy/etc...
Don't kid yourself. It is possible for the government + corporations to ban things. For example they can lock down a device so you can't add unapproved software to it. Don't think that is possible? It already is on some devices. All they need is a law to not let you connect to the Internet with a non-locked down device. That is coming eventually anyway.
But many/most of those active users already used Facebook as well. So they paid $18 billion to get a small increment of users? These acquisitions are driven by ego, not business sense.
I didn't say it was "failed" (even though it is). They spent $19 BILLION on a company that has no profit, and maybe around $800 million in revenue. Just for "market capture". Except many WhatsApp users also used Facebook Messenger, so you are "capturing" people you have already "caught". For a fraction of that they could have built WhatsApps features into their platform and competed. But for an executive with too much cash, it is more fun to acquire and bloat the company some more.
This isn't adaptive, this is "Deep Learning". VC's need to get their checkbooks out, this is the next big thing! Get on board now...you will make BILLIONS!
LOL. There is no difference. A machine learning system is still programmed the same. It is running algorithms and rules just like any other program. People stick "neural net" in there and think that it works like neurons. Here is a hint: a neural net isn't anything like a brain. And now they just add "Deep" to the front of "neural net" or "learning" and think that is must be, like, really good now, because it is "deep" learning. We aren't any closer to AI than we were 40 years ago.
Why continue to develop what you already have with developers you already employ? Why not spend billions of dollars acquiring software and engineers you don't need? You have to think like an executive. If they aren't "buying" stuff they aren't important. There is a reason that Facebook has 13,000 employees now. It has nothing to do with the business.
1/4 mile=0.402km. It can go 0.402km in 9.87seconds. I don't know what "100/m" or 100km/h has to do with it, even though you think those are "standard" units. Those weren't mentioned in the article OR summary. You don't need to figure the acceleration to convert time and speed to "metric units". What a idiot you are.

How hilarious. Market value? Somehow I don't think the NSA cares that their monitoring reduces market value.

You mean users like the PS4 or XBox One? Neither have been cracked. Neither have the last two gens of AppleTVs.
You wouldn't need to re-engineer the entire internet, just the edges. it is definitely doable, and eventually it will be done I believe. The excuse will be child porn/terrorism/piracy/etc...
Not always. Look at the AppleTV3+, and current game consoles. They haven't been cracked.
It isn't impossible in this instance. Only a handful of tech companies control most core Internet access. This isn't drugs or guns.
They weren't available as they were all playing golf in Palm Springs with Frank Sinatra.

Eventually what will happen is your device will not boot if it detects "unapproved" code. That is coming.
Wow, this is like AI. I'll bet this is powered by a Deep Neural Net using Deep Learning.

Computer based statistics and data mining is now AI? wow. Who knew? We used to just call them "programs".

The Skype protocol is proprietary. No one has any idea if it is secure or not. Therefore it isn't secure. Support open standards and protocols.
Wow. Here in Seattle we are still using 9600 baud modems.
By the way I have a kid and live in the US and there are many days we don't even use a car. We don't all live in suburban wastelands.
Oh I see...it isn't useful for YOU...so that makes it useless. Wow, self centered much?

Apparently the study was performed on a dead salmon to confirm the results. fMRI is pseudoscience.
Why is 50 mile range useless? Lots of us commute 50 miles.
I'm always amazed some people can't do unit conversion without their head exploding. Even with Google and computers available at their fingertips!
