Yeah, I agree. Data should be guarded by high priests who keep it pure and untainted by the common people.

That used to be the attitude that programmers use to take before PC's. Fortunately those days are over and we all have to opportunity to participate, and even *gasp*, make mistakes.

I know nothing about databases, but I use them. Maybe not as efficiently as some guy in his white tower, but it works. They seem rather simple to me, certainly not something to base a career out of.

If iD and another software developer decide that the need "help" developing a common game core or that they may benefit, then they can sign a development agreement to share their IP. There is no need to extend that agreement to others who may use that game core to compete against them. You may belive otherwise, but the marketplace says differently. If there were true benefits to going opensource, then the software houses would do it.

"Over the long term, increasing productivity is the strongest factor in determining a country's overall wealth."

I used to believe that. Now, I ask myself what do we mean about the "country's overall wealth"? Where is the weath shifted to? Certainly not to the worker who lost his job or the guy who puts in more hours to increase productivity. Most likely it shifts to the owners of the enterprise.

Of course, we are talking about a city government here - so the owners are the taxpayers. In general though, I am skeptical about those who talk about increasing the overall wealth of a country.

Be careful too when you rely on unemployment numbers. Not only are they not terribly accurate - they do not indicate the quality of those remaining jobs. We should be concerned about the fact that we have given many of our maufacturing expertise (jobs) here in the West (North America/Europe).

Of course puslishers don't do this, it would be financial disaster - as OSS is. Think about that the next time you consider making something you wrote OSS.

Its not decadent to want something that works NOW, rather than waiting for something that may never arrive, and may not provide any benefits. Kernels are a tool to acheieve an end goal: to support an OS that will run applications. The end user doesn't care if its microkernel or not.

It is also illogical for you assume a microkernel design is superior since you haven't seen one true example succeed. Most likely there is a reason for this, and I doubt it can be blamed on the culture. After all, work on the HURD has been continuing for over 20 years with no evidence of technical superiority. Yes, but if this "contribution back" actually occurs and is so beneficial to everyone involved, then the person that forks the BSD code would be compelled to contribute back anyway. It would be in their best interest to do so, according to those who belive in the GPL and the OSS concept. However, if they used GPL code, they would be *forced by the GPL* to contribute back not only their changes to the code they used, but also any code that "touched" that code (within limits of course), which is clearly may not in the best interest of the developer.

In the real world this is a significant different and makes the BSD license *more free* to me. I personally think the GPL is much less useful because of this, and this difference is why so many other licenses are used for significant OSS from commercial sources.

Of course, if you live in an academic world (like Richard Stalin (I mean Stallman), you are not concerned with these issues so the GPL seems reasonable.
