Backup automatically, I doubt it, but you get nifty features to mount the drive automagically to workstations.

I guess you could backup it in a easy fashion with a shell script from any workstation.

The Apple webpage says that you can share Hard Drives and printers (More than one of each type) using a USB hub. I doubt scanners would work.

For the "read music directly from the USB drive", just get an AppleTV and store your music on it, that's exactly what you are looking for. I'm sure there will be hacks to put bigger drives in it. Hell, I'm sure sme geeks will figure out a way to put Linux on both the AppleTV and the Airport Extreme.

FYI. Look at the Airport Express as well. You can connect a third party remote to it now, but you still need a computer ;-)

That makes an almost solid state device to:

    Act as router (3 ports)
    Share USB printers
    Share storage

To me, it's a more integrated and "out of the box" solution.

I know, it can't serve webpages...

  9. My Problems with Ebay... on EBay's Bid To Go Beyond Auctions Disappoints · · Score: 1

I have an account there since 1996 and thing are in some areas better than before, but in others, it is worse. Let me explain.

    1. I'm in Canada. Too many listings are "Will ship to United States Only" there should be some incentive for sellers to sell to other countries. Ebay Canada is really bad, and the variety of items there is not up to par with the USA eBay.

Keep in mind that it used to be worse. We were a long time with no PayPal in Canada, and back then, many sellers refused Canadian Money Orders outright.

I often get what I want by asking the seller if he will accept to ship to Canada, but it really is an hindrance.

    2. The Price Gouging(TM) It's obvious that some sellers are selling items with a ridiculous price and then charge a lot more than required for shipping. That practice is against eBay Rules, but I have yet to see anyone that was prosecuted.

    3. eBay Store and reliability. I recently had a problem with one seller and I gave up. The seller's store advertised a phone number + email address for support, but I never received any answer for the seller. I had to send back the product to the seller (Cell Phone Battery) at m,y expenses. By the time the item was sent and my waiting time, all the eBay automated services refused to provide me with support for either a refund nor leave feedback to the seller. Reading the seller's feedback, I saw that many people had the same problems.

eBay to have a store front on eBay, tthey should check the customer satisfaction once in a while. A feedback rating below 99.9 % should automatically mean that the whole store front is frozen and seller should have some explanation to do with eBay themselves.

    4. It's not really ebay's problem, but custom duty fees for individuals for Low Value Shipment should be no more than 5 bucks. It burns me to pay no less than 35 $ to UPS or FedEx everytime I buy something from the United States. eBay should have it's own brokerage service. That would boost international sales.

    5. Brand new items are nice, I'm thinking here Cell Phones (Unlocked). They would be almost impossible to find here at a good price. But stores selling dollar store items online, I don't think so. Bulk posting of items should be limited and they should be marked as such so they don't clutter searches.

As a "backward" canadian, that's my opinion...

  12. Re:Wasting electricity in the winter impossible? on Appliances Hog More Energy Than High-Tech Gadgets · · Score: 1

This is actually an important fact. I live in Montreal, Canada. Winter here is normally very rough in january and february. The heat "lost" by cooking, heating water and operating computing equipment is really useful as a supplement to baseboard heaters. Slef-Cleaning your oven is really efficient believe me... The Dryer is another thing. Several companies tried to make something to reuse the heat, but it never worked well. Since that heat is also very humid, it's not very wise to reuse the dryer air output. Actually, since I have my rack with 4 machines in it running 24/7, I barely have to heat the basement. Add to that, that since I moved, the room with the 5 water heaters for the building is in the basement, adding more heat to the equation. I will see the result this winter. In the summer, having your rack means to turn on the AC all the time though... You can't always win... Oh and BTW, Heatpumps are not really an option here. They stop being efficient at about -20C. We get some -30 C and -40 C...

Also I want to point out that the iPod dock does include a line out. It is not of RCA type, it's actually a 1/8" plug, but it does sound wonderfully. The volume level of the iPod does not affect this line out.

Now if only we could get a Super Dock with a Remote...
