Hell... even back in the EIGHTIES (read: HORRIBLE American cars), people in Eastern Europe bought them because it was a status symbol (like German cars are here...). To have a 20 foot long Cadillac in countries where the cars are 10 feet long is the perfect demonstration of ludicrous excess... Turns a lot of heads when you drive a Cadillac by a bunch of Minis...

Yeah, but in the mean time, unless I'm mistaken about how these things work, you're pissing a way a bunch of bandwidth. What percentage of documents on the web with an extension of ".jpg" are NOT jpeg files? Is it really worth it to waste the bandwidth on both sides (crawler and server)? I don't think so.

It kicked ass for news reading... was my default news reader until Outlook Express and Free Agent introduced me to bulk "download and decode" options..

I used to get my porn by downloading each UUENCODED (yes, UUENCODED) message and then reassembling them by manually editing the text files to remove the headers... Then, I'd run UUDECODE on them... then, I got to see that grainy 70s porn shot! (circa 1990)

Back in the day (early 90s), I used archie, veronica, gopher, etc.

How cool was it that Arche searched "known sites"... hehe... Can you imagine... People would register their FTP sites with Archie so people could find their stuff (just like with search engines and web pages without the financial motives).

It was cool. It was fast. And my WHOLE college shared a 56K leased line baby! BitNet anyone? The _original_ relay (relay@VTVM2)?? (I helped to maintain the full-screen (*gasp*) Relay "program" written in DCL for VAX/VMS when I was a freshman in college... )

    - I take the paycheck and go to strip clubs to check out the ta-tas.

    Long-term approach:
    - I take some of that paycheck (that would normally go to strip clubs) and get hair cuts, buy shampoo, clean the crust out of my eyes and generally make myself more acceptable to society.
    - I use my newfound cleanliness and try to get free ta-tas in the form of a girlfriend.

I've found that the short-term approach is much more fruitful and takes less effort... :)
