If you have dial-up or do not want to buy a hardware firewall. Then download the freeZone Labs Firewall. It doesn't contain adware or spyware. You don't need the Plus or Pro pay-version unless you need all they extra junk, because they give you the full firewall program. Some cool features it has is it can block programs from accessing the net (Programs ask for permission ) and it has a setting where it hides your IP address when possible.
It depends on what OS you are using, if it is windows then you should just get whatever is cheaper because it can't HANDLE 64bit well yet (if ever).
You need to make sure the OS you are going to use can handle 64bit. I like SuSE 9.0 Pro. 64bit edition $129 or free via ftp

It may work but your not going to pull out the performance that certain linux or BSD distros can give. --I type this on win xp but truth is truth
