This is not a book I'd buy sight unseen. Just look at the table of contents and then consider the title. At 208 pages, chapters 6 & 7 better be most of the book.
1 An Open Source Primer.
2 Open Source in Business Terms.
3 The Open Source Philosophy.
4 Open Source and the Internet Economy.
5 Network Organizations.
6 Managing a Virtual Team.
7 Managing Distributed Web Projects.
8 Tools for Building Open Source Sites.
9 Open Source Tool Tips.
10 Setting Up an Open Source Project.
11 Open Source Management Anecdotes.
12 So, Are You Ready for Open Source?
XP is to software engineer as management-by-objectives (MBO) is to MBAs - a process du juir.
There is nothing unique in XP that isn't taught in any responsible graduate software engineering program. If their particular twist works for you, then fine. If not, fine. It is the underlying principles of software engineering that matter, not how they are espoused.

By definition then Windows isn't either...

Is UNIX An OS?

An operating system is the software that comes with a computer (or OS distribution) that programmers and users need to make themselves productive.
Using this definition, neither Windows nor the Mac "OS" are operating systems either. Out of the box, they aren't productive. Windows, without the Orfice Suite, is pretty useless. I wonder if the author considered that?
I think most people don't understand the relevance of this book. Another one would be Principles of War by Carl von Clausewitz. The concept of "center of gravity" is really applicable to management and managing large projects.
If you treat your people the way you want to be treated, you'll do fine. I've been in management nearly 20 years and I'm constantly amazed at the number of people who forget that as soon as they've been put in charge. Your #1 role as a new manager is to think ahead and make sure your people have what they need to do their job. You are also there to remove obstacles impeding the progress, as well as being a filter. You filter the BS coming down from management and the BS going up from your people. I really enjoy busting roadblocks but the filtering part wears me down at times.
What happens after I graduate? For students who subscribe throughout dental school, the VitalBook you have when you graduate will always be active. The College is finalizing a plan for alumni which will be announced later. If you decide to return the VitalBook after 90 days, or you do not renew the program after the first year, your VitalBook will become non-functional and will not work at all.
The NYU FAQ implies the DVD will still be readable (meaning NOT time limited) -- just won't be updated. It appears the story leading was misleading.

It's good to see such acceptance of new ideas...

I can't believe I'm reading all these negative comments. Where is your sense of adventure? Where is your openness to new ideas? And how can you comment on its airworthiness and safety unless you are (1) an aeronautical engineer or (b) a pilot?
My major complaint with these efficient cars is that vertically enhanced folk can't get in them. The reviews always seem to be by short people. I'm 6'5" and would love a fuel effieicnt car. KK
It will be very interesting to see the subsequent reports and see what effect if any the Gartner Group's report has on the number of IIS servers.

Believe it or not, the book Corps Business: Management Principles of the U.S. Marines by David H. Freedman is excellent.

I think they are complaining about the use of Cue Cat not the creation of the barcode software. Any others agree? Ken

Providing a method for individuals to turn off the tenure clock so they can have children without sacrificing their career.
It seems that there is already a mechanism for this -- sabaticals.
