There have been plenty of movies that I haven't gone to see in the theater because I've watched a copy I downloaded and hated it.

How many times have you been tricked into going to see a movie because of the trailer, only to sit through a horrible film. I think the movie studio's should have an obligation not to sell junk and lie about it with misleading trailers. So if a movie is good enough to see on a small computer monitor at a low resolution, and it is good, chances are you will want to see it on a big screen. Likewise, if it sucks, that is the movie studio's own fault. They should put out good movies and be honest in advertising. I am tired of having a movies best jokes be in the trailer, and having the movie be worse than the trailer.

Second, if a movie sucks, it is not like we can get a refund like if a hamburger is undercooked. If the movie industry treated us like valuable customers then I would be all for giving them some respect. But the more they treat us like sheep, the more I see it as a US vs THEM.

And at 12 bucks a month, I would like to be able to use the computer to play it on my 36" TV. But I know how much worse a movie can look just by doubling the window size on my 17" monitor. I can't imagine it would look good on a TV.

RealPlayer 10 and Helix DRM Provide Highest Quality and Security

What kind of DRM will be included in this? Can I download the movie and watch it on my laptop while away from a network connection. And what will stop someone from recording what is on their screen. I can't help but think this product/service is going to suck. Plus, ever since RealPlayer invaded my privacy years ago I have never trusted them. I do not like a company where I have to search and search and search for a setting that will disable sending reports back to the company about how I use my PC.

How about getting back to where people can buy and own stuff? Like back when VCR's came out and if I taped something, I could watch it anytime and anywhere. I hear iTunes lets people download their product and use it as they wish. Why dosen't the movie companies do the same thing?

If AOL starts adding on the charges, I think many of them will finally get DSL or a cable modem and use some other service. This is going to backfire and hurt their sales of dial up service, which are probably declining anyways.

And even if all the other IM services start charging money, it does not matter to me. I could bang out a simple java program which uses sockets to send IM's back and forth with my friends. Anyone that wants to be added to the list can get the program emailed to them, no problem with platform. I know it sounds simplistic, but it is so simple to write in java. I bet there would be a ton of free open source alternatives within a few days.

  4. I use Windows... on What Keeps You Off of Windows? · · Score: 1
I actually like many of the things Windows does. It is easy to use, installing hardware and adding drivers is easy to do. Even blowing off a hard drive and reinstalling is very easy, much more easy than Linux. I remember a night trying to install Red Hat 6 on an old P200 with 64 megs, and it was such a pain. Besides having to open up the computer and write down every peice of hardware (there was no auto-detect like in Windows), sometimes entering the right hardware would still not work). I never could get X Windows to run. Not even a light WM, like Ice. For some reason, the 1 meg video chip on the motherborad just would not work with Red Hat.

Having said that, I also run Debian. It installed with ease on my p4 laptop, and the fact it does not use rpm's is so nice!!!

Since I use both, perhaps the question for me is what will make me leave Windows. There is only one thing that comes to mind. If they keep forcing DRM in everything they make. It seems like Windows wants to keep limiting what I can do with their products. I want to watch an occasional DVD from Europe on my PC in the USA. Not on standard Windows components. I can't say how many times I have had to find open source alternatives to standard Windows components. And I hate the EULA. I hate that Windows can keep having the "update" pop-up and want to connect to Microsoft, and that it is impossible to turn off unless messing with the registry. And I REALLY WISH Microsoft would wait with releasing whatever version of Windows they are working on until they fix most of the bugs. I was so MAD when I PAID for Windows 2000, and I wanted to get service pack 1 to fix security holes-- Microsoft made me have to accept a new EULA and that damn update pop-up was part of it. I had a friend with Windows ME on a HP computer they purchased. It kept crashing. They eventually had to go to the store to buy Windows 98 (they did not want to learn Linux, they just wanted to type papers for class).

So I guess if Microsoft decides to sell computers that make the RIAA happy and fill it with DRM technology, and take away my control of the computer, I will finally say goodbye to Windows.

By knowing some things like what city/region the printer was sold in, where the money was used, one can start to paint a portrait of the counterfeiter. How is it the movie industry is using invisible dots in movies to catch people who illegaly tape films?

And unlike the movies, I bet they are doing this in secret. Other things they could add to software is the printer to have small dots indicating when the money was print (based on the bios or os of the system), or maybe something to identify the system it was printed (like something unique like the mac address of the nic or something equally unique).

I have been very demanding of my theater, and if I am unhappy about anything I will demand to see the manager and complain until I get a refund.
