Who is going to draw the line of where these jamming devices can, and can't be used. What if the next step is to have devices that broadcast a "free" advertisment on your cell phone inside stores. It seems to me that someone else using what I own is stealing. In this case they are stopping me from using a product I own. Same thing, theft by denial of use.
The proper way to regulate cell phones is for buisnesses and private properties to develop policies, and post them. Most theaters I go to have signs that say "turn off cell phones". If someone does not, they get thrown out. It is simple. Or, if you want to be savvy, you can set your cell phone to vibrate, when it goes off you can quickly see the caller id, and if it is important you leave and go to a washroom or step outside. What's the problem?
What will happen one day if your mom/sister/brother gets sick, and they try to call you to come to the hospital, but you are out at some fancy resturant or theater that uses this device?
I am all for setting up a base on the moon, and learning from the experiance. But I bet you it will not be used for "science", or at least not the way you think.
*Puts on tinfoil hat*
The military will use it for their own purposes, for their own experiments. It could become a prision, where p2p file share users go. It could be the best of what human minds can think of, but under the political control of the worst that human minds can think of.
*Takes off tinfoil hat*
I think a better plan is to try and build space ships that are capable of leaving the solar system. We should be able to build some kind of large ship for the purpose of exploring space. Where will the biggest discoveries be made? In some station or on a ship?
If there is some devistating event, like what killed the dinosours, what will be more useful to those of us left? Ships or a base? I would like to see the day we have 10+ ships that house over 50 scientists, exploring every corner of our galaxy.
Why would a spammer need to register a website to send out their spam? How is this going to help eliminate spam? The reason I want a valid WHOIS database is so I can find contact information if there is a problem.
Second question. Why not have some small fee in order to access the WHOIS database. Make it a dollar charge, that has to be charged to a credit card with correct contact information (for example, they fax you the data). If someone abuses the database, then they get cut off.
Third question, and the most important. How the hell can we make a better system where the 98% of us who do not abuse resources do not get screwed by a few bad apples who will do anything for a buck. Do we make it a charge, so there can not be an easy profit? Do we have a system where a few trusted people are allowed to forward requests, and block those they know are from the bad apples? How do we identify the bad apples?
This all pisses me off. I hate it how one person can force the rest of us to NEED locks for doors. It would be better if they did not exsist.
I remember watching this show in college. Back then they previewed new video cards, talked about software, and played will all sorts of gadgets. They also let people know about new products comming out. So I am suprised the show never took off. I never once was offered Tech TV with my cable deal after leaving the dorms (it has been many years, and I now get 60 channels, twice as many as in college). I know when I was in college, if Tech TV gave a good review for some cool product, someone in the dorm would purhcase it. So they had a great audiance for selling products. I wonder why they failed?
Voila, je m'appelle John dans le internet. Vous voulais sais ma? Pourquoi? Vous amie ma? Je bois trop. Ughhhh. Alors, je continue avec l'histoire.
I do not know you, at least not in the biblical sense. I just followed the trail of smart people here, and it runs by you. But if I had to pick between the two names you offer, I think I would rather be called Josh. When was the last time a woman yelled "Oh, Dennis"? And how much alcohol would that take? With a name like that, one might have to fly half way around the world to find a gal, places where one's competition would be Charles or Albert.
Okay, okay, I have secretly been stalking you, following you since your early undergraduate days. Just far enough away so the expolsions from your lab did not cause me discomfort, or scare my puppy. I need the puppy, it attracts the women. I am waiting for that breakthrough, when I can steal the discovery and claim it as my own. I am the evil genius known as anhiserous bushy. Golden is my color, seated next to the Gods.
Anyways, Southpark is on. We will have to continue this in an hour. Cartman is about to call Kyle a jew.
I agree in part and disagree in part. I knew some discarded people (aka the superfluous man) who were smart, and some people at NU that were not smart (aka the player with connections). Take me for example, I am a fucking worthless lazy drunk. Yet I am the yoda of the bar. Got a theoretical political problem, come to me. Wanna know about computers, come to me. Wanna get laid, go to the bargin bin of the porn emporium. Oh, life is shit. I want to die. That is the suffering only a genius can know, or a faggot lamenting about his twisted exsistance. At least the faggot has some friends. The rest of us suffer, gaining occasional refreshment from a Camus or Dostoevsky. We would be lucky enough to live in a world where everyone had a warm bed and a hot meal served with love. Fuck McDonalds I say. Fuck the corporation I declare. Give me real love, not the $2.99 supersized version.
You do not care that he tricked children and forced porn on them? Did you forget to take your medication? Seriously, you need help. Maybe you do not have children, and do not care.
From the article: Zuccarini admitted in court documents that one reason he preyed on websites popular among children was ''because children are more likely than adults to make spelling errors and to mis-type website addresses,'' prosecutors said. He then redirected the children to porn.
This is a sick person. He targeted children. Not only that, but if people can make a stink about Lindows because it sounds too much like windows and causes confusion in adults at computer stores, then how can they let this slide where he tricked children to watching porn? What the hell is this guys value system? Making 10 cents off each child he tricks to going to a porn site? Was the 10 cents worth it for him? I would like to hear what he has to say in prision, when he is forced to look at jail porn, live and first hand.
AMD's Athlon-64 (for PCs) and Opteron (for servers) will protect against buffer overflows when used with a new version of Windows XP.
But then it says:
The new AMD chips prevent this. They separate memory into instruction-only and data-only sections. If hackers attempt to execute code from the data section of memory, they will fail. Windows will then detect the attempt and close the application.
So, which one is it? Can any OS use this new feature in the hardware?
Why do you need the big x86 processors? Is the robot going to be able to have complex thinking algorithms?
I would probably start with some very cheap circuits. You can program them to do simple movements or simple lcd displays. If you want a "brain", you could add it on. Most of these circuits can be connected to by a serial cable.
There's also an interview with Dr. Hayley Bignall, an astronomer from the Joint Institute for Very Long Baseline Interferometry in Europe (JIVE), where he discusses the concept of using interstellar scintillation to get observations that we could never measure from here on earth
Jive? Who's running the place? The gang from What's Happening? Is Sherly still fighting with Rerun?
Names mean something. If you look at legislation in the USA, they often try and make laws look like the opposite of what they are, like the patriot act, which takes away civil liberties. So if they want to have the name Jive, they will probably not get the same respect as if they were called Astronomy Scholarly Studies.
My daddy left home when I was thirteen,
Now I don't blame him,
He said he did not know the login or domain.
He left ma and me
nothing but a windows machine
and shitty website domain.
Now I knew I would search for that dirty dog
cause he embarrased me in front of pimple peggy,
and I knew I would never get her login.
Cause all I wanted to do was make an OS call.
But the system call was protected.
Cause it was windows.
Now if I had linux
I could have pleasured and woo'ed the crowed
And showed all the boys her panties in the bathrrom
Cause my digital camera works with linux.
Most Linux folks are asshole, people who can not balance a checkbook but can figure out how the orbit of jupiter affects the earth. Some are good people, but most are jerks cause they never hit the pussy, like a confused nigger learning algebra. The pain, oh god the pain! It must suck to be 30something and know more about the computer box than a real box. What? RTFM? Oh, the MAN pages you never got in your subscription to hustler? Lemme guess i+1 = creamed panties? Instead, lets make it as hard as possible. At least Gates got laid, and made an easy system that a monkey could set up out of the box. Just imagine how much of an asshole he would have turned out if he never got laid. For all we know, he could be sitting in his momma' basement writing viruses. Pussies, your all a bunch of faggot pussies. Get a life. Cause I am doing my part. Whenever I see a nerd in daylight I kick the shit out of em. Nerds, don't let the sun set before you get out of town.
HOW DO YOU DO? MY NAME IS SUE. NOW YOU GONNA DIE!!!
Let's use the home metaphor - you live in a house in a neighbourhood built by "MS Homes". They are nice, comfortable homes, but the security system involves closing your front door with a plastic latch. Because the latch doesn't LOOK like plastic, everyone feels secure. Burglars, however, suspect there is an easy way in to the homes.
Now, if none of the good guys examine the security and say, "Hey, maybe these latches should be steel", then eventually a bad guy will figure it out and your home is open for business.
In such an event, if a good guy opened *a* front door on a *single* MS home, then posted a note in the local newpaper that maybe latches should be upgraded, I'd sleep with a shotgun until my latch was replaced. In the end, I'd have a safer home and know it. Without the good guy, I don't have a safe home, AND I'm unaware until a break in.
Interesting post. But just because I have a door with a plastic latch does not change the fact the burglar is a burglar. He is not breaking in for the benifit of the people, to expose some flaw. He is breaking in beacuse he wants to break in.
I remember stories my folks told me about how there was a time when they slept through the night with the front doors unlocked. That is because nobody was breaking into homes. We have gone from that to a society where people sleep with guns and have extra pad locks on their doors; and instead of a poodle they have a rotweiler. And this is the product of the good guys telling everyone to upgrade their security? No, they are not the good guys. They are both shades of evil. They are the problem.
Did it ever cross your mind that I have to run a computer system with no security, one that is completely open, and expect that nobody will break into it because I own it?
I keep hearing the same repsonce from everyone who is anti MS. They all say, the source code is bad and insecure and filled with holes anyways. They say they are doing a service by forcing the holes to be fixed.
But I still ask the question, what gives the hacker the right to "fix" these holes. In the pursuit to do something they think is right, they are violating everyone elses rights. It is like a burglar breaking in my house and stealing, then telling the judge "I just wanted to show him he needs more security".
Personally, I think I will see if there is a class action lawsuit against the guy, once he is caught. I bet you there will be. This guy, and anyone who helped him will be burned at the steak.
Yep, I think they could catch you. Didn't you see the public camera behind you that photographed your plates?
Seriously, they can catch you. If you hack, you have the tools on your laptop or computer. Maybe you have a CD filled with them. That is all it will take to nail you. A few angry words told to people about how you dislike company X, an attack on company X, and you having tools that could complete the attack.
But it is not that bad. Just stop doing anything illegal. You have no right to mess with someone elses system.
And I would tell you this. If you happen to park your car and try hacking on my ststem, I have a nice honey pot waiting. It is like a guy in a house with a gun waiting for a burglar. Come on, come and get it. It's dinner time.
But I gotta tell you, whoever stole and posted the source code is an idiot. What good was gained from doing this? What benifit is there?
I wonder, if as a bi-product of releasing the Microsoft code, that hackers will write more viruses and worms after seeing the source code, if I can sue the person who let out the code because it will increase the time I have to spend securing my system.
I hope the FBI finds and nails this guy. Considering the scale of his/her actions, they should lock up the SOB for a long time. This person should be the person they make an example out of.
There is no way in hell that any HMO or insurance company should ever be allowed to tell a patient "we're gonna fly you half way around the world for this surgery". The HMO's are horrible as it is. They get doctors in their network and supply a doctors practice with nearly all his patients. Then they tell the doctor if any surgery, or very expensive treatment has to be performed, they must first call the HMO for approval first. Guess who makes the approval? Not a doctor at the HMO but a buisness manager. They even have incentives at HMO's to provide bonuses for those buisness managers that keep costs the lowest, and they fire the ones who spends more. If the doctor prescribes the treatment anyways, they can get dropped from the HMO and lose all the patients the insurance company provided.
Laws need to be passed to protect the people. These insurance companies are evil. We would be better off with a state run health insurance system than the hyena's that currently run the insurance companies.
Radio signals take several minutes, travelling at the speed of light, to traverse the void between the two planets
Hmmm. Funny, NASA does not say anything about that.
Anyways, I guess it is good to have an article which might stirr up support in the community as a whole.
So, what is next? Will every planet in the solar system have a series of satelites that can form a solar system wide network? If this experiment of launching rovers is a success on mars, as it looks to be, then I can see a day when we have rovers on all the planets, perhaps even a manned station on different planets.
Too bad Gene Roddenberry is not alive to see the begenning...
Not true. Government should not have access to those records without a court order. So those records are private. If a company gives out your credit card data to someone, and you did not allow for that or sign for that, they have violated privacy laws. The only reason they give out that data is because you allow them to, read any credit card application. The problem is nobody reads those dang things and the credit card companies can get away with anything. If my bank can get me to pay 2 dollars to use an ATM, and everyone fought against them and lost, then imagine what your bank can do when you do not even know it. You have to read all those legal documents and respond.
The reason you feel like there is no privacy is because you never challenge these institutions. Did you ever write a letter to your bank telling them you do not allow any release of private information, that you do not want them selling your data to third companies? This might be why some people open bank accounts in the Cayman Islands. They are not terrorists, they just do not want information being shared with third parties unless they explicitly agree. Why don't banks here say they will not sell your personal information?
Just because the paper exists, does not mean that government has the right to seize it. Even if they do seize it illegally, there are the courts to protect you.
I agree. I think at the least there should be a congressional oversight committie, and they should have in place a private watchdog group to review what the office of homeland security does. I would have people who were trusted by the ACLU in that group, known privacy advocates. If they put someone in that office that is just a rubber stamp, then they might as well do away with the oversight because it might as well not be there. All they are doing is adding some official stamp to try and gain legitimacy, which is something they can only have if they have the public trust.
I think it is the will of government and the will of those in power to take away as many freedoms and rights as they can. I doubt you will ever have the conditions again which formed our country. Back then, you had people who experianced government infringing on them. They knew what it was like to have the State dictate the course of their life, their religion, their associations. When they wrote the constitution, they wanted to protect everyone from those breaches of power. They believed it was a natural god given right to be free, to have freedom. Today you see those freedoms being limited slowly, one peice at a time.
Just remember this rule, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
People act for their self benifit, and when they can to help their friends. Look at Bush and the oil industry or Cheney and Halliburton. Cheney will make millions from them when he leaves the white house. The temptation is too great. That is why we need rules in place to protect those in power from abusing the power we give them.

i am feeling awfully cynical today. sardonic too, with a splash of "eat shit and die, big brother".
btw, how will this be protected? what happens if a multinational corporation keeps information gathered in your country in a different country?
