    Microsoft and linux and other products ARE used in mission critical systems. But, they have to be used in a dual independent solution system with a hardware comparison system. I know, I helped develop an aircraft landing system. And it uses QNX for the guidance solution and WINNT for the verification solution. See DO-178B

    I once wrote a bell labs cardiac cardboard computer emulator running on a fortran emulator running on a HP 2000-F basic system. It ran at an almost human computing speed of one instruction / sec.
    Let's see you boot "anything"(1) on top of that.

    Move your granny to the phillipines, for $30US a day you can get a live in, gardener and maid. And they speak english. Try that with a robot.
    Robots for the lonely elderly is depressing and ugly. It's just like internet life. only mechanical.

    Why do we keep seeing this microsoft sock puppet's cut and paste crap reply in every article, and modded to +5? Did somebody find a crack in /.'s mod point system? It's simple, Microsoft developes poorly designed, ill spec'd, bug ridden crap. There is no other explanation. Bad engineering and a rush to profits since day one. I've been using Billy's junk since altair basic. It sucked then, it sucks now.

    I computed the cost per rider for the Portland Oregon MAX light rail line when it was constructed in the 80's. Using the estemated ridershit and lifetime of the system, The cost per rider was over $20/per trip. Unfortunately, The ridership is only 1/2 of estimates. And the contunue to build more. At even higher per rider rates.

    Im some states, 10% of assesed value is not umcommon. So the taxes on your $223000 home would be $22,300/year Yes, many are losing their homes.

    Mildly drunk all the time - forgetting to backup. Wildly drunk now - reformatting your drive due to a suspected virus infestation. Sober - banging your head as you go through a 25 Hr reload and trying to find all the Cds in your 2000 disk collection.

    Try and find anything NOT made in a foreign country. The only jobs available in a few years will be service ( plumber, doctor, retail sales ).
