    Librarians do a bit more then stock shelves with books sorted by author.

    Librarians have been working on these problems for centuries, why not start with what they know?

    The general public will accept a solution that is good enough.

    Even a mathematically sound solution will fail if it is implemented incorrectly.

    Nobody credible has proposed a reasonably anonymous and secure method yet (except the printed paper ballot)

    This one arguement against gun control, make them illegal and only criminals will have guns.

    I hopefully have demonstrated that statements like this are tautologies and as such don't carry any meaning. You can use any conceivable law in this argument; if you take it serious you have to reject every law thinkable.


    The point is that by banning guns, only those who we would wish not to have guns would have them. The law abiding citizens who may have a use would not.

    I'd guess (without any stats) that more people are killed by legal guns than illegal guns.

    You would be guessing wrong at least in Canada.
    Guns that end up killing people tend to be stolen, illegally stored, or owned by people who shouldn't have a gun.

    Few deaths result from responsible gun owners.

    Myself I don't have a gun, I think most city dwellers need a gun like they need their SUV.

    Acutally that is my point, once you break one law (listening in), would you care if you infringe on someones patent? I doubt it.

    I'm sure that a criminal really cares about patent infringements.

    Laws should not be used to shore up broken technology. This only impedes law abiding citizens, and does nothing to improve the protection against crime.

    This one arguement against gun control, make them illegal and only criminals will have guns.
    Make this illegal and only criminals will listen to your phone call.

    I was starting a personal database.
    Arbitrary lists of key words, and a description.

    But generally I organize by the type of document, then the topics.

    Images/topic
    Code/program task
    documentation/area

    When you read a book you aren't copying it.
    When you install software onto your hard drive you ARE copying it.

    This is why you need a license to use software in the US. Other countries do have different laws.

    But if you don't, your license automatically falls into standard copyright law which basically gives you more rights than most EULAs

    Uh no, to use software you must make copies (onto the hard drive or into memory). These have been found to be infringing in court.
    Unless you have a license to use the software you are committing copyright infringement.
    I wouldn't try the no license trick.

    I like to think with all the people who get angry and yelling and swearing someone who is very firm and unemotional might be a bit more disturbing.

    You could also insult their intelligence and the fact they can't read. I'm generally for treating them like the intrusive little shits they are.

    And the be nice they're just doing their job crowd, they are forcing their presence on me, not the other way around.

    I don't know what the URL is, my wife did it.
    But it doesn't cover anyone.
    However if you ask to be put on the do not call list they can not call you. I don't even think there is a waiting period.

    So without even saying anything if I know it is a telemarketer I just say "put me on your do not call list and the do not call list for this call center"
    If you say you're not interested they will hang up before you can demand being removed from the list.

    If they break US law, they can be punished. To make money from calling the US, they have to do some sort of business there. The US gov will just attack that.

    Really this protest is just preaching to the choir.
    And harming the very people who are already against software patents.
    Shutting down a pile of OSS sites isn't going to make the closed source users care any more.

    Actually as such a user I would look and say "see they just shutdown and prevent you from doing anything for political aims, how unreliable can you get"

    Arbitrary shutdowns are dumb.

    Glass shelves, or wire. edging to prevent drips.
    Cooling through the door.
    Ice machines, water dispensers.
    Individually adjustable shelves.

    This is similar to KDE & gnome do the same thing in a similary way, but still a bit different.

    Why can't I can copy text from my shell window into my e-mail app and web browser?

    I spend too much time on IRC, so I have several responses.

    1. Because you're a moron.
    2. If you selected the text, then pasted it with the middle mouse button you could.
    3. RTFM (yes X cut and paste IS documented).

    The problem with a consistent user interface is that you have to pick one.
    The great power of vi is it has an excellent UI, however not one I'd want to try and use in the gimp.

    Pick your analogy, driving a car, building a home, operating a microwave or television, etc... The general public cares as little about computers as "we" do about how our cars operate.

    Yes but they do care how the product performs. They want different sizes, colours and intefaces. Fridges are split left/right, freezer up top, freezer at bottom, or no freezer at all.
    Let alone all the other features. This CHOICE matters.

    You know government would be more efficient without these elections.
    Just give the people what you think they want and don't give them options for anything else.
    Most people don't care, look at voter turnout.
    No wasted times on approval ratings, election fundraising and whatnot. Just let the government govern.

    Freedom isn't about efficiency, ease of use, learning or consistency. It is about being able to decide for ones self, and not being told what you can and can not do.

    All this yammering about how the consistent interface of windows is so great. what about the fact that it doesn't work well.
    Windows can hijack the window manager, you can't change much more then the colour of it. Still doesn't even have virtual desktops.

    What applications don't work? Rather then complaining perhaps someone should file a bug report.

    I can't think of any time I've had trouble running an application under a different window manager or desktop environment.

    Well except flightgear 0.9 under KDE the sound doesn't work.
