Mpeg like most other video compression schemes uses key frames. Every so many frames it does 1 complete frame that doesn't rely on the previous frames to generate an image. Start the tape and it will give you nothing for a couple of seconds until it hits a key frame then the video starts. Digital cable and DSS television work this way. Ever wonder why it takes more time to change channels than with analog? Thats why.
Wow. fsx sounds like the cats pajamas for nfs if you read the kerneltrap threads. Looks like freebsd will be pulling ahead on nfs even more now.

Use cards from the same vendor. Don't support any windows 3.x machines. Older macs are easy but take a variety of cards. Easy to support but hard to stock card inventory. Laptops are picky and we never got 1 card to work in every laptop. We kept a few of another brand just in case. Buy 15 extra dongles for every 100 pc cards. A trouble ticketing system is a must. A large percentage of your users will be able to get everything working on their own. Many will help neighbors. It is a great way to meet new people.

When an x86 box can render dvd video in real time Apple may have a need to worry. For now the reasons people buy macs are video and other media creation. The fact that Photoshop is that much faster on the mac is a reason to buy one. Of course if all you do is run word and outlook you might as well get a pc.
I have had a Ricochet for 4+ years and every time I pulled it out in public everyone wanted to know about it. Seems that they never told anyone about their service.
I expect someone like Worldcom to puck it up and use that to get into wireless in this country since the Sprint deal fell through. Plus they already offer it as a reseller.
Why is this news? I don't see posts for other companies having layoffs. Why is VA special. Dell sells Linux boxes too and you don't see a slashdot news link when they have layoffs. At the end of the day VA Linux is just like any other PC reseller. They buy a bunch of pieces from other manufacturers and put them together and put their name on it. If they go down in flames it still isn't really news for slashdot. Rumors certainly aren't.
I now fully expect to be moderated down by the anything with the word linux masses who read this site.

In a perfect world all data transfers would be encrypted. In this world they aren't. Whats to stop someone from splitting off part of the beam and using it in a packet sniffing sort of way. I know that lazers are coherent light so you have to be in the same plane as the beam to pick it up but that plane could easily be a foot or two off a roof top. At least with hardwired networks you need to gain physical access.
Thats is definately one of the many unfortunate side effects of this whole thing. I grew up in KC and Sprint is one of the biggest employers in the city. Aside from the 14000+ employess there are a lot of other people who are employed because sprint is there. I'm sure MCI will clean house and the KC Metro area will suffer more than its fair share.
It should be noted that while it is great they use linux, it is replaceable. The Irix machines on the other hand.... I'd like to hear specifically what thier setup is.
Journaled Filesystem. Linux needs it to be competitive with the big dogs. If the feature were available it would remove a huge barrier to Linux's success. The other OSs mentioned all have this feature (HP-UX?).
It most likely was NT service pack 2. But then again NT isn't nearly that cool.
I liked the ad though. It seemed to stand out from those flashy ads that are desperately trying to get your attention while you are in the kitchen getting more beer from the fridge.
By my calculations you should be able to get about 1800 to 1900 housr of music one one of these. THere are of course only 4380 housr in a year. Subtract sleeping time and you could go all year and never have to hear the same song twice. Of course it would take a while to accumulate that much music.
It is in the neighborhood of 25 full length films in mpeg2 format.
Of couse with that much space you might as well stor ethe music in aiff and not lose the dynamic range.

I have one setup ready to go. Alas I have a Toshiba cdrom and not the $300 used sgi unit. I am probably SOL with out that part.
