    There's nothing stopping you from going back. The rest of us can still use the vastly more functional modern web applications to get stuff done. Yes, there are security issues, but security issues exist regardless of whether they are in the browser or in software. It's not as if we never had any computer security issues before Web 2.0...

    He just doesn't want anyone pointing out that driving a car on public roads for pleasure is endangering others for their own amusement. If he can twist this into some stance in defense of Freedom, then it makes him feel less of an asshat for trying to demand no-one impinge on his right to endanger others, when that's all he really cares about in the first place.

    "Manifestation of personal freedom"! If that's what it means to you, your ideas of freedom and your own self image are damaged beyond repair. If you're admitting you'll never change your mind, you are not being rational, by the very definition of the word. If you're not being rational, why should anyone assume you were rational when you concocted your strange opinion? You essentially just farted on Slashdot, and it made you feel good. Nice. Thanks for that.

    He worked on the designs for Falcon 1. That was just one large explosion restrained by safety-critical systems. I'd say you're doing him a slight injustice :)

    The insurance companies will be the ones to force manual driving out of the picture for most people, as self-driving cars will be inherently safer due to their better visibility, lack of distraction, better situational awareness, better feedback from the car and so on.

    They can be taught to do exactly as you did. LIDAR can see with far more accuracy than you can, and can detect immobile objects better than you can. It knows how wide it is, how wide the lanes are, and the size of the obstacle, allowing it to drive round it with more accuracy than you can. As it can see traffic lights, it too can realise when one is on red for too long and follow the rules of the road in such circumstances, just as you do.

    If you have such a high opinion of yourself and assume that a computer can't perform basic operations, no wonder you think they'll never work. One day these cars which you think won't work will be driving people around without issue. Will you still claim they're impossible?

    No, it's not widely adopted because of uninformed public outcry at nuclear accidents, and the inherent costs of nuclear power stations.

    You also need to factor in the insurance, maintenance, cost of the car, cost of parking, and cost of legalities of owning a car (registration, inspection, etc.). Pretending those don't exist isn't exactly helping you make a rational case.

    I was going to call you out on your paranoid nonsense, but then I noticed you spelled MS with a dollar sign! I've never seen that before, and it struck me that because of that, you must really understand Microsoft's intentions, business model and their plans for the future. You are a sage. You are providing invaluable information for the greater computing community. You, sir, are the saviour of the world.

    Back in the real world: If you are worried about MS getting a hold of your host GUIDs, MAC addresses and so on, you shouldn't be using Windows anyway. Feigning outrage only serves to make you look like a moody, entitled princess.

    "Unsupported" means you can't call/email Microsoft to get help. That's it. They're going to provide updates, of course, as that's in their best interests.

    Then there are alternative systems of public transport, frequently adopted in Germany. This entails longer-distance trains using the in-city tram tracks. They are slightly-larger trams (some with toilets & a restaurant car) which connect the larger cities with outlying towns. That means you can be in one town, walk to the nearest tram stop, jump on, and in minutes be whizzing to another town or city for a few euros. It's great stuff.

    Your truck is not doing anything. That's what "waiting for you" means - doing nothing until you need it. Your way of life doesn't depend on you owning your car, unless having your CDs is your way of life. If that's the case, I think you have more problems than cars :)

    The cars already exist, and are being worked on by some of the best automotive and tech companies the world over. You've not given any actual reason why it's a "horrible idea", you've just spouted endless streams of breathless vague objection based on nothing but misunderstanding and ignorance.

    You might have some points, but none of the issues you raise are show-stoppers. Other companies' cars could as far back as 2013 detect those things in real-time on their first exposure to the road. That will only get better, making your concerns less valid as time goes on.

    We are not "far" from that - judging by the progress and momentum, it's just round the corner.
