Climate is not usually measured in periods of less than 30 years, so either you haven't got a clue, or are trying to create a reality which simply doesn't exist. You do this every time, though, so it's not surprising. You frequently get confused between sea ice and ice on the land, and use the extent of the sea ice as some sort of argument that the land ice is doing fine, when in fact the opposite is usually the case.

    Please grow up.

BTW I think you are entirely correct. People are people - one person's relationship to another doesn't magically imbue either party with some magic quality, or even if one were to assume it does, that would then apply to everyone else, rendering the "magic quality" moot. It might not be the most comforting thought in the world for some, but the logic behind it is undeniable.

  3. Re:Prison population on As Prison Population Sinks, Jails Are a Steal · · Score: 1

You are assuming minorities are criminal because they're minorities, and not because of anything else. If you look past peoples' ethnicities, you'd notice that the poor are far more represented in prison populations than rich people, and US minorities are far more likely to be poor than white folks. Finland's low prison population has more to do with its better social protection and smaller wealth gap than the racial make-up of its populace.

So yes, the US has screwed over its poor people, and this is the consequence - more of them feel the need (whether rightly or wrongly) to break the law to get by.

The longer people like you scream "minorities! brown people! scum!" the longer these problems will go unfixed. Of course it's easy to just point the finger at some obvious visual difference (especially one that resonates with racists and other less thoughtful people, such as yourself) than it is to delve deeper and realise that some fundamental aspects of US society are responsible for this ridiculous crime level. Throw in the pathetic war on drugs and now you have a much better - but still incomplete - understanding of the reasons behind the US's embarrassing level of incarceration compared to first world countries.

You really haven't got the grip of the "correlation does not imply causation" thing, have you? Or is it just when brown people crop up that your logic goes out the window?

I think you're forgetting something rather important: the DLR was constructed with driverless trains in mind, specifically things like track/train visibility/access from the platform, escape routes, and communication between the platforms and the control centre, and so on. Some of the old lines on the underground were designed for steam trains, and most of the newer ones were designed for trains with drivers. Automated trains are wonderful, but in the event of an emergency, the software can't lead passengers out the rear door and down the dark track to the nearest exit, or slam on the brakes when some unfortunate person winds up on the tracks... The latter is easy enough to fix, but the former not as much.

You do realise "split second" is like a lifetime to a computer, right? You also realise that your hardware was developed to run around in the jungle swinging from trees and running away from tigers, and not to drive 80,000 pound trucks at 65mph... Once automated trucks are developed, they will be inherently safer than the humans who operate them today - they have specifically-designed sensor packages, computing power far greater than your brain, and far more accurate input from the vehicle and road. It's just a matter of time - driving trucks isn't magic, and while it might be difficult, a well-designed computer will be far more suited to the task than any human, glitches and all. Your comment about planes is a bit weird as the vast majority of air travel is conducted by computer, including a fair number of landings. Automated taxiing and take-offs are also possible, and will be coming to an airline near you if they are not already.

Just because Boeing and Airbus are not removing human pilots at the moment doesn't mean to say they won't be in the future. Their lack of action on this part is not an implicit agreement with your temporal short-sightedness...

It's cheaper for everyone to pay a little bit of money to get healthcare and ensure everyone's covered. In sane countries this is achieved by having a single payer system, which allows ridiculously cheap prices (compared to the US) for medicine, treatment, training, facilities, equipment, etc. as everything is bought in bulk, and economies of scale come in to play. Private healthcare is still available if you want, but most don't need it.
