I hate to derail the discussion, but you did ask for it. People don't try to make Buddha go away because Buddha never claimed to be a god. He always maintained that he was just a man. So why try to make him go away? People have issues with Christianity because they see things like the Pope saying condoms don't prevent AIDS, ministers railing against gay people, and thousands upon thousands of Christians making a mockery of marriage by getting divorced all over the place. People are just fed up with hypocrisy and such obvious hatred. And, yes, the Bible has been correct about a few things. But it's been sooo wrong on soooo many more things, it's pointless to try to use it as a source of fact, as you might as well make the truth up - you've got just as much chance of being right. And you might want to read this list of crucified saviours, some of whom are claimed to have ascended to heaven, with just as much evidence for it as for Jesus.

Not necessary. Windows' and Linux's capabilities overlap, but are not the same. Some things can be done only on Windows, some only on Linux. That means if a company has to do something only possible on Windows, it's a damn sight cheaper to run Windows than Linux. In that case, it's a choice between 'make money' and 'stare at a blank screen'. I'm not saying that's what every company will face, or even most. Just some. And for them Windows is a no-brainer, and infinitely cheaper.

They don't have to upload data when the cows haven't been in contact with other cattle, or haven't been checked by a vet for illness. It's only when that happens would information need to be uploaded, and clearly that involves contact with the rest of the world.

The UK has had a system like this since the mad cow outbreak. If a cow is found to be ill, the cows it has been in contact with can be identified very quickly, and dealt with (WITH FIRE!!!). It's not impossible.

Yes, I use my computer(s) for work, and as a hobby. And even still I can see that buying a Mac is a complete waste of money. Sure, I could buy one and it'd be great, but I could buy a same-spec computer from someone else, and save a bunch of money in the process. Money I can use to buy peripherals, guns, porn, whatever. Yes, mechanics likely make less than I do, but they their expensive tools are better value than the cheaper alternatives. That is not the same as in the PC market, especially with Apple. I doubt many of those mechanics have a set of tools designed by a famous clothes designer (they do exist - I can't remember the designer, however) - they'd have tools priced for what they deliver. That's not the case here. You probably don't see a problem because you've given Apple close to $10,000 - realising you're been had could be rather painful ;)

Not this tired shit again. Jesus Christ get a grip. If you can't be bothered to read the list of new features to Windows 7, why bother posting to slashdot just to show everyone how ignorant you are. Also:

    1. The file manager does a lot more than allow you to move files around.
    2. The icons, while new and shiny, are merely there for aesthetic reasons, and not a feature in and of themselves
    3. Windows Media Player is not crippled, and will play anything thrown at it provided the provider of the content has not explicitly stated they don't want you to (allowing anyone to watch more media on it than any other video player. With DRM you get *more* content. But that's not a fashionable thing to say on slashdot, even though it's clearly demonstrably true
    4. The drivers aren't buggy. Windows has WHQL driver certification for drivers, providing excellent drivers. Any bugs are not from MS but from the companies who wrote the drivers. Guess what - the same issue affects Linux
    5. IE8 isn't as bad as you seem to think. It's not full of security holes, at least not on Vista and 7
    6. Yes, you get those. And a shit-tonne more.
    7. Yes, the compatibility is there, and it's actually fucking impressive.
    8. It's not crippled - it's powerful. It works very well indeed.
    9. Media recorder? Can you be more clear?

You also missed the fact you get Media Center, Powershell, disk encryption, compatibility with most of the software and hardware out there, and, shit - just go read the list and save yourself more humiliation. Also, if money's your issue, you can still go and download Open Office and all the other OSS you want, as a great deal of that works in Windows, too.

And as for little to brag about, Windows 7 already has half as much desktop market share as Linux. I know you don't like Microsoft, but please don't stoop to making things up. It makes you look bad, makes the things you argue in favour of look bad, and makes the whole OSS community look bad. We don't like FUD from Microsoft, so we should not accept it from ourselves.
