  1. why? on Schizophrenia Experiences and Suggestions? · · Score: 1

Why is this disease "chronic, severe, and disabling"? In what ways will it destroy the quality of life of the individual who has it? My best friend, and long time romantic involvement has schizophrenia, yet is none the worse for it. Yes, there are times when she would become a little vague, or yell at someone to shut up when there was no one there (Yes, that really does happen), but is this all that different from the actions of other, "normal" people? I find your language offensive, and would suggest that you talk to a professional psychologist, who can explain to you that schizophrenia is not the horror that you take it for. Kevin

When will people stop claiming it was the British at Bletchley Park who cracked Enigma? It was a group of Poles working under Marion Rejewski at the Biuro Szyfrow who beat Enigma, but not until Hans Thilo Schmidt had betrayed the Germans by providing copies of the operational manuals to Enigma, which contained enough information to decipher the internal wiring. It was not until Poland was invaded that the bombes used to decipher Enigma encoded messages were moved to England. It is true, however, that it took the resources of Bletchley Park to build enough bombes to decipher messages after the number of wheels on the Enigma machine increased.

While I would definitely agree that there are too many people with computer science degrees relative to the number of available jobs, this fact must be taken with a grain of salt. Yes, this is true for a BS in CS. I would say that it is in fact less true with an MS in CS. And certainly, if you take the time to get a PhD in CS, you can find a job; but the job will likely be in academia. While this is not for everyone, there is a distinct shortage in the (sometimes) backwards US of high school and college level computer science teachers/professors. A quick search for PhD level job listings reveals about 71000 job listing sites (most of the top hits with multiple listings). So while a BS in CS might seem like a good idea, you can't really stop there; a masters is almost a must in todays job market, while a PhD will go a long way (more so in academia).

Sorry, no. Photons are not "bigger" than electrons. While it is true that visible wavelength photons have longer wavelengths than the electrons in the current flowing through your processor, most photonic devices use much higher frequency photons, such as t-rays (terahertz photons). Furthermore, this being the case, they would not be using optical glass, but rather much lower index materials. I remember reading in Phys Rev B. about a photonic transistor which was based on t-rays, and hence operated in the terahertz range. Also, if electrical circuits are so much faster, why is it that bottlenecks in networking links are the electrical switches? Just something to think about. For the record, I am a physics student, and have done research with t-rays.

Interesting that you mention this. I asked her about it, and she says that she does not, in fact, take any longer to process a page of english text than her native text. While writing takes her longer in english, reading does not. (This is simply what she tells me...I don't have any evidence for that).

I showed this to a student here who is native to Indonesia, so english is not her first language, and she had a very difficult time reading it. Any thoughts on why this might be so tied to your native tongue? I would have thought that anyone fluent in english (which she is) would be able to read the post without much difficulty.
