  1. Re:Make the vendors work for you on Ask Slashdot: 802.11n Bake-Off Test Plans? · · Score: 0

I second this. I've recently done enterprise purchases of IPS gear. I was very upfront with the vendors. I told them they had to show me how their device performed conducting tasks XXX, YYY, and ZZZ. I told them they could come to my lab and do the tests there, or they could bring me to their lab. I wanted each vendor to have the highest chance of success. In every case, they brought me to their labs.
In hindsight, make them do it at your place. :)
I don't envy you. Simulating a bunch of wireless clients sounds like you'd need some Spirent gear. (Very cool stuff, btw. We just got some)

  2. Re:Risk management on Dealing With Laptops in a Business Network? · · Score: 0

My employer took an alternative view: No laptops.

They decided that the extra cost of the devices (compared to desktops) and the security risks make them too much of a risk. So, we don't have any. As for that balance between letting people get things done and security? Well, it doesn't really exist. It's all about security.

Except for all of the managers that have managed to get them. But, that's a different story...

Uh... I actually worked at a company once where they did search people upon arrival and departure. No one brought laptops, documentation, or anything else in or out. If you couldn't fit it in your pants, then you weren't leaving with it.

I can't agree with this one enough.

I'm one of two UNIX guys in my current role at a basically all-Microsoft shop. Not only can we handle Linux, Solaris, and AIX, but we do just fine working in Active Directory. The Windows guys really don't have any desire to do anything other than Windows.

On top of that, we tend to be more diverse at the application level as well. We can get our work done in vi, emacs, OpenOffice, or Microsoft Office. And, from what I've seen, the UNIX people tend to be better at using keyboard shortcuts rather than clicking on buttons in the Office apps, making them more productive.

Along those lines, from what other people see, who's more likely to use keyboard shortcuts, Windows or UNIX people?

What's the name of that book? I'm just starting Executive Orders, which is the book that starts with the plane crashed into the Capital Buliding. I'd love to know the name of the book that's right before this one!

Sorry... I guess I didn't proof-read too carefully. Of course I don't charge my parents, or family for that matter.

When I get desktop questions from Mom about her friends, co-workers, whatever, I'll give advice or talk to them on the phone. If it gets more complicated than that, then I'll say that they either need to pay me or they should take it to a local shop. My Aunt is the worst about this. She usually just takes it to a shop.

I went over to replace a power supply (I told her not to get the HP Pavilion) in my sister's computer a few weeks ago. Before that, I had my brother's WinXP box for about 8 days cleaning off spyware, virii, and such.

I hooked 'em both up with Firefox and Openoffice.org. But, I don't think either are using 'em... Ugh...

I do charge my mother and her friends to fix their computers. Sure, I charge them the friend rate, but still... It is usually enough of a deterrant to get them to try something else.

I value my free time greatly. If they want to pay for my services, then I am glad to help out. But, if they want it for gratis, then I just say that I am too busy.

Is it nice? Not really. Does it help maintain my sanity? You bet!
