  1. Make use of this space on Hibernation on Demand · · Score: 4, Funny

Since this is a dupe (and a very recent one at that) and all we're going to hear is whinging about it being a dupe I figure why not make use of the space. I submit that we change the subject to something worthwhile discussing: Category: ASK SLASHDOT Subject: DUPE ARTICLES "With all of the fancy software and technology at their disposal, how is it possible for Slashdot to not have a "technological" system in place to ensure that dupe articles are not submitted to the front page? Are their systems too complicated to enable the development and use of a simple dupe article checker that would automatically search and warn of similar, perhaps identical, articles that have recently been posted? Is it that the cost of such software is prohibitive, or that they believe submission of dupe articles are considered "funny" to readers and therefore help the bottom line? Or is it pure laziness? Discuss.

  2. Transporting enriched uranium on Can Terrorists Build a Nuclear Bomb? · · Score: 1

From the article "The canisters were loaded back onto the Antonov 12 and flown to Russia, where their contents were sent to a secure facility and blended with less-potent materials to create a mixture that is of little use to aspiring terrorists."

Can anyone tell me why they didn't add the less potent materials _BEFORE_ they chose to transport it? I would imagine that it would drastically reduce the chances of terrorists having an interest in it and getting their hands on it while it's in transit.

  3. Re:Do people in the US... on Humans are Causing Global Warming · · Score: 1

The difference is that creationism and the theory of evolution can exist side by side without too much ill effect. Global warming on the other hand is likely to be a black and white issue, whether we choose to believe that it is caused by humans or not will determine the future of the planet and possibly our survival.

  4. It begs the question on Intermec Claims RFID is Proprietary · · Score: 4, Insightful

Why didn't the RFID industry do a thorough patent search BEFORE they put so much effort into commercialising the technology? If the patent in question so obviously covers the majority of inventive steps involved in the RFID process then a search would have warned them of potential patent breach. If the patent is quite obscure and not directly relevant to the RFID process then applications should have been made on behalf of the indsutry group to cover this simply as a means to stop any one company from trying to claim ownership.

If only companies and such industries learned from such obvious mistakes made in the past then there wouldn't be all this whinging about how the patent system is broken. I am an inventor myself. I always do thorough patent searches before even contemplating filing. I know how difficult it is to get a great idea to commercialisation even if deep pockets are available. Because of this, I don't think it is fair to blame people that own the IP for wanting to get their dues when that invention makes it to market, whether it be by their own hand or not. Although, I do agree that the issue gets quite contentious when large companies, as opposed to the little guys, do this with submarine patents. But then again, the groups commercialising the tech should have done a thorough SEARCH!

  5. What happened to the mobile office? on The Absolute Worst Working Environment? · · Score: 1

Well I gather that you won't be answering the phones during that time... Surely you can take a laptop, preferably with a wireless connection, to somewhere you can work confortably for half the day that the small war in your office is on... A case in point for the benefits of the mobile office/computing.
