You are, of course, assuming that your employer doesn't encrypt hard drives. Encryption software such as Becrypt can encrypt the whole hard drive which [obviously] means that you can't crack/reset windows passwords or read files with another [possibly cd bootable] os.

OK if you have a spare few thousand years to decrypt the hard drive (or however long it would take) then you may be able to.

  3. What doesnt keep me off windows? on What Keeps You Off of Windows? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I made the move a while ago, and I now have my linux desktop doing everything I want, including syncing my iPod and palm. It crashes less often (I have some hardware problem that I've yet to figure out), and I can't copy without select 'n' paste. Of course there is always that its free and legal (unless you believe sco) and I can use it with a clear conscience. The support that opensource communities offer is unparalleled through forums and mailing lists.

Also a major factor is innovation. Windows seems to do very little, whereas linux is constantly evolving adding new features etc.

I also like the die-hard attitude. It's not a case of it doesn't work, oh well nevermind. It's it doesn't work, I know, I'll rewrite/port/hack it until it works.

Plus you are given decent control of your system and don't have to put up with menus etc. if you don't want.

How would you feel if half way through harry potter people started flashing lights at you... it would piss you off. You have paid good money to see the film and don't want flash lights being shone at you. However, NV googles are less intrusive... but what do you think they are really going to be used for? Obviously watching the back row action.

  5. Still... stuff works in windows on Seattle Times Reviews Desktop Linux Distros · · Score: 5, Insightful

It can't really be argued that most of the gadgets such as palm's, digital cameras, iPods etc. work easily with linux. Most of them can be made to work with fiddling and some software that someone has hacked together, but at the end of the day the hardware vendors have more resources to throw at the software, and inevitably produce better software that works well with their product. Until they start producing software for linux, its simply too difficult for the average computer user to get things working on a linux desktop. Take my iPod for instance, with windows I just put the CD in, click install and its done - with a GUI that is _far_ better than gtkpod's (although gtkpod is great), whereas with linux you have to install different things, compile them in some cases, and its just much harder work.

  6. hows about child porn??? on Currency Detection Discovered in More Products · · Score: 1

Would it not be better to work on something useful like blocking child porn being opened. Obviously it would be much harder to do [well] - the possibilities of a picture of a young [grand]son/daughter on holiday/in a paddling pool etc. being censored is more than likely, and would annoy people considerably more than opening currency, but if they are going to censor things then at least they should be worth censoring.
