  2. Re:Anyone actually using widgets? on Yahoo Launches Dashboard · · Score: 1

I'm currently running... iTunes Companion, Calendar, Day Planner, Weather, Gorgy Clock, Moody, and Glactica (have to know when the next new episode is on) to name a few. Yahoo Widgets/Konfab is more flexible in that the widgets can remain open all the time unlike dashboard....

  3. Why not use the barcode then? on Library to Require Fingerprint to Use PCs · · Score: 1

"Right now we give you a library card with a bar code attached to it. This is just a bar code, but it's built in," said Mark West, the library's deputy director."

Here is an idea... use the barcode to allow access top the computer. Just like checking out a book. The barcode scanner is a lot cheaper than a biometric device not mention the fact that the library card is a unique identifier.

"Naperville library officials said the technology cannot be used to reconstruct a person's actual fingerprint. The scanners, made by Naperville-based U.S. Biometrics Corp., use an algorithm to convert 15 or more specific points into a unique numeric sequence."

Hmm... the library is in Naperville and the company that makes the scanner is also in Naperville? What a coincidence!

As a member of the team that is building the ground system for the science center that will be the primary interface between the public and the telescope I'm happy to say that code is all Java based. We have managed to combine the best that the open source community has available with a couple of commercial products to be a very productive development team. Here is a sample of what we are developing:
    • "Thick" Java Client for proposals, planning and data retieval - yes folks, Java on the desktop does work
    • Estimating and visibility servers - many computing drone managed by a J2EE server
    • Web services access to all of the public data produced by SIRTF - Perl, .NET, C++ is doesn't matter you can all get the data
Oh, I forgot the mention.... there is not a single Windows box in the operations system. It's all Unix based because... well you know why don't you?
