"Funny" posts are often modded as "insightful" or "informative" by experienced moderators who understand that "funny" up-mods have no affect on karma, but still want to reward the poster.
Of course, I'm sure plenty of brain-dead n00bz contribute to the phenomenon also, but I like to discard any data that doesn't support my elegant and nuanced conclusions.
"Ubuntu is just the next new kid on the desktop block - just like Xandros, it's a lot of promise, but lack of finish"
I've been changing distros ~2x/week for the past couple of months, looking for the one that's closest to the "sweet spot" for mix of functionality, stability, and ease-of-use for first time Linux users (aka family and friends), and you've hit upon the top two candidates there (Ubuntu/Xandros). Which makes me nervous, because you're making me think I missed something now.
I'm asking out of genuine curiosity - could you be more specific about what you find lacking in those two? My lack of expertise in the area frustrates me, but doesn't prevent me from asking (probably) stupid questions like this one.
(FWIW, FC2 was not in the top 10, but I'm currently giving FC3 a try anyhow.)
This is inane (yes, that's spelled right, look it up).
The two are being compared by how they fulfill their intended functions - specifically, resolution. Cost per system is interesting, but irrelevant to the basic point - which device better performs its intended function?
Whether or not either one is in orbit, on a mountain, or floating on an abandoned oil platform is completely irreleveant to the main point that's being made.
XXCOPY
Haven't personally used it to backup onto DVD or CDR's before, but have heard of it being done successfully/easily by others.
Incredibly versatile tool. For my system backup I just use XXCOPY to clone my whole 'doze drive onto a spare HD loaded in a removable drive tray. When done, I have a complete, bootable backup sitting on the shelf for the next all-too-frequent catastrophe.
Take a deep breath and relax - what makes you assume that the "Big Brother" is an Orwellian reference, vs. a reference to the idiotic reality-tv show of the same name (thus the capitalization, perhaps)? RTFA and decide for yourself if this doesn't ring true.

Where's the "-2 Astroturfing" mod option when I need it?

Oh yah, and it's free.
I've found this this to be both useful and FREE. May not have all of the tools you're looking for, but it's an excellent place to start.
