  1. 12" is small but fine on Apple Releases Major iTunes Update · · Score: 1

I've had few gripes about using full-window on a 12". I think I'd rather have the uber-compactness that comes with a 12" than the ablility to see all the information at one time. You just have to be efficient and decide what not to display, versus what you feel you need.

    Here's a screenshot of mine.

  2. Beware, downloaded songs are watermarked on New Tool Cracks Apple's FairPlay DRM · · Score: 5, Informative

Songs bought and downloaded from iTMS are watermarked with your account information. Checking out the source for the song with a simple text editor I was able to clearly see my name and email address used for purchasing from the store. I don't know yet if these are stripped when playfair strips DRM, but it's worth verifying before you start playing pirate again.

Besides, CD quality is still better audio.

  3. Re:i do have a choice on Microsoft Unhappy With HP's iTunes Decision · · Score: 2, Interesting

He means that with a Microsoft OS you can choose where to buy your processor, where to buy your motherboard, your video card, etc, etc. With Apple, there is just the one vendor since Apple killed off the cloners, and if you want to use the hardware, you pay whatever Apple wants to charge for it.

And look what happens when you buy all your hardware from random sources and piece it all together... you get so many machines that lock up for no reason at all. This is not the way Apple wants it. We don't pay Apple for superior hardware, we pay for a machine that works, and works rather flawlessly. (and looks damn fine while doing so.)

  4. Re:Will localized versions "detect" local currency on Photoshop CS Adds Banknote Image Detection, Blocking? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I also ran into the block when trying to paste the jpg (also, thanks). Cutting and pasting the image by using long thin strips worked best, so as not to get a full image of any remarkable feature of the bill. What's interesting to note (no pun intended... :( is that once the bill is fully pasted into Photoshop, you can then save it as a PSD and re-open it in Photoshop with no problems.

Working along the same lines, (using Mac OSX) I then pasted the jpg into Preview and exported to a Photoshop document. It opened with no problem! It seems almost as if Photoshop just doesn't trust any "unreliable" source of image input.

  5. Re:a great congestion reduction tool on Camera Watch: Links to Public Webcams · · Score: 1

That's a good way to bring down the camera network... post a few in a movie theater. See how long it takes for Miramax and others to sue them for copyright infringement. And, if there's audio, then the RIAA can sue them for broadcasting the ambient radio sounds coming from a passing motorists' car stereo... rock on

  6. Re:Heat? on Apple Issues New G5 Benchmarks · · Score: 2, Informative

At WWDC I had the lucky opportunity to test the G5s with a few apps. Yes, Apple claims that the machine is dead quiet, and it *can* be, when using less than a tenth of the CPU. When I sat down I could hear no noise at all, but after I started playing with the Dock the fan started kicking in, blowing cool air out the back. I launched one of my apps that uses almost all available CPU power and after ten seconds the fans were full blast. This thing heats up fast, and the fans, although still relatively quiet, were chugging hot air out that case faster than anything I've seen.

I think the space inside is necessary for all that air throughput, as well as some of the plastics inside that direct airflow. This was not designed to be an iMac... while it is sleak, it's not something to be displayed on top of your desk. It's certainly large and loud enough to be put on the floor, and I don't think the people using this professionally will mind the noise (or the size). If you want a quiet, stylish performance, get an iMac.

    rock on
