  1. Re:It's hardly a "fallacy" on Privacy and the "Nothing To Hide" Argument · · Score: 1

I think that there should be a right to privacy and that it should be allowed to simply not exercise it (same with certain other rights). Bang, suddenly everyone is happy, from J. Random Geek to Mary T. Exhibitionist... except for the executive branch of government, that is.

Note that the same doesn't apply to governmental agencies and (under certain circumstances) companies: In these cases full transparency should be employed unless completely impossible (e.g. national secrets).

The people should be protected from inquiry unless they explicitly wish not to. The government should be open to inquiry unless that would threaten the country.

  3. Re:Wired: The Eternal Value of Privacy on Privacy and the "Nothing To Hide" Argument · · Score: 1

If we ever get to where we can't destroy the government by force, then government will drift towards dictatorship. If we have guns, we can take the government back when it goes to far - but without privacy, those guns cannot organize an effective resistance.

And I'm sure the tanks and bombers are gonna be real impressed by your SMGs with ten shot magazines... If you actually want an insurgency to work you'll need many people, enough to win over (part of) the army. So unless you have your entire state (and preferably a couple other ones as well) raise up in arms and demand a complete reworking of the USA or secession you're not going to have even a tiny chance.

Note that there's still the little problem of them just sending UAVs (and cruise missiles where appropriate) so they won't even have to pit citizen against citizen as in a classical civil war.

Generally, you shouldn't have to script input at all. That's what DCOP/D-Bus and similar IPC APIs are for. Instead of removing all menus (which usually already are accessible via the keyboard - e.g. via the Alt key unter Windows) people should rather make their applications more scriptable.

I tried to imagine the GIMP using this in my mind but the submenus would get out of hand. For example, you would like to use script-fu? Well, there's two submenus under that of a dynamic allotment of add ons that I can structure in directories however I want. Tough to deal with stuff like that.

EMACS-style commands. Command-Shift-S opens the Script-Fu screen, then press T for the Tcl-Fu screen, then U for Uma's Filter Toolset, P for Painting-style Filters, I for Impressionism and finally D for De-realism-ize. Imagine how much more productive you could be having great and memorable shortcuts like Cmd-Shift-STUPID or Cmd-Ctrl-Alt-FHQWHGADS at your fingertips!

That only applies to GEMA members. Membership is optional, although for some reason they assume that all musicians are members (so if you are a non-member musician and don't release "certificates" stating that your music is not covered by them they might harrass people for playing your songs. Also, GEMA coverage is per-member and not per-song; once you become a member ALL of your songs are covered by them). Also, the GEMA has some way of allowing you to host your own songs without paying, although that applies only to streaming media (no downloads) and only until 2007-12-31.

So yeah, you can host your own stuff, but only if you don't intend to become a GEMA member.

So you can't use Russian and Chinese AV software because it's from countries notorious for not caring much about privacy and for having the government mess with companies. You also can't use US AV Software because it's from a country also notorious for domestic and foreign spying and for having big business co-opting smaller business in order to sustain their business model. You can't use F/OSS AV software because it doesn't have the resources the vendors have. You might have gone with AntiVir, but thanks to Schäuble it's now possible that AntiVir comes with a free Federal Trojan.

It appears that there is no acceptable AV software. Get yourself a BSD box, isolate yourself from networks on which there are Windows clients as well as you can and hope for the best. (That or use AV software despite there not being a trustworthy and useful vendor.)
