  1. Re:Space... on Top 10 Reasons for a Space Program · · Score: 1
I don't want to sound like a tree-hugging hippee here, but do we really trust for-profit companies with space? I know, it's infinite, and little old us could never have an impact. Funny how they thought the same about the fishing/whaling until we decimated the world's sealife.

As far as I'm aware, there is no real regulation of space in any way. People are free to do or dump whatever they want up there. As government is not bound to work solely for the profit of its shareholders, I feel they might not take the same risks, etc.

Personally, I think some proper regulation/international observing body should be established before we "open" space for everyone. Note: I still agree it is essential that private enterprises are allowed in space.

  2. Re:DVDs on Music Industry Compared to Movie Industry · · Score: 2, Interesting
As others have pointed out, it is not as simple a comparison as that. You generally devote all your attention to watching a DVD for 2 hours. With music, as you said yourself, you listen at work, in the car, etc - i.e. whilst doing something else. I almost never just sit and listen to a CD whilst doing nothing else - somehow that almost seems like wasting time.

Also, with a DVD, the cost is often "shared" in that you will watch it with other people. I find a lot of the fun of watching a movie is in discussing it afterwards. With a CD you are a lot more likely to listen to it on your own (almost certainly if you like Justin Timberlake).

I'm not sure if I have really made a point here, but those are just some thoughts I had.

So what are you saying? That in order to be a "true independent" film, it has to be a box office failure?

  4. Re:One question comes to my mind: on Balloonists Attempt World Altitude Record · · Score: 1
Actually I am slightly curious why Qinetiq is sponsoring this. Qinetiq is the commercial arm of what was DERA (Defence Evaluation and Research Agency) who were Britain's military research organisation. DERA was split up and part of it was privatised to form Qinetiq. Are we going to be invading Syria by helium balloon now? (Obviously there is also still a part which is not "open to the public".)

Has no-one else noticed that the date is wrong on the BBC site? According to Qinetiq1 site itself, the launch date is 3rd September.

  5. Re:CD Contents on Sunday Newspapers, Now With CDs · · Score: 1

I think you may have missunderstood. The CD cover had a code that you could enter into a program on the CD to see if you had won. Presumably there is a one way algorithm on the CD to see if the number you enter matches the winning "key". If you don't win, you don't do anything with the code. The only time you need to send in the cover is to claim the prize.

  6. Re:In other words, no news on the CD? on Sunday Newspapers, Now With CDs · · Score: 1
There is no news on the cd, but you did get a newspaper paper 1" thick, free with the CD, all for about $2.

I have also just noticed that it links to here where you can buy all the CDs featured. How is that for a little diversifying?

  7. CD Contents on Sunday Newspapers, Now With CDs · · Score: 5, Informative
I have the CD in front of me and for those that care, this is some of the stuff it contains:
    • Lots of renault adverts
    • Feature on David Bowie
    • Film trailers (with a small write up): Calender Girls, Gigli, Le Divorce, Italian Job, Matchstick Men, Ned Kelly, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Young Adam
    • DVD trailers: Antwone Fisher, Bulletproof monk, City Of God, Evelyn, Maid in Manhatten, National security
    • Music (few short samples, CD writeup): David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Dido, Seal, Placebo, Starsailer, + about 10 others
    • Few arts features: Andrew Lloyd Webber's paintings, Opera, Ballet stuff
    • Game trailers: Colin McRae Rally 04, Crimson Skies, Great Escape, Italian Job, Rugby '04
    • Few kids games and DVD trailers
    • Best of TV guide
    • What's on listings for your area (requires internet)

The loader is quite slick, but unfortunately it has been made with flash and took an age to load the first time on my machine.
As an asside you also got a code with the cd cover to see if you had won 1000gbp. I was tempted to write a program to brute it because it was only 3 letters (all ucase) and 4 numbers, but you also need to send in the cover to claim the prize...
