  1. Re:I have a Vantec LapCool on Lapinator and Lapinator Plus, a Closer Look · · Score: 1

I thought this topic went away months ago after all the buzz about sperm killing laptops ages ago. In any case I use a Vantec LapCool Notebook (from Newegg of course) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82 E16834999413 with the added plus of 4port USB hub. Lightweight and slim, it is easy to haul around where ever you go. Actually I do use it at home all the time for playing WoW on my desktop as well as playing couch potato. Luckily I have no concerns about the penis scarring since I don't have those parts o.O

  2. Finally someone I can relate too on High School Dropout, Self-Taught Chip Designer · · Score: 5, Insightful
Being a graduating electrical engineer, ham radio operator, and of the female persuasion....IT IS ABOUT FREAKING TIME I've had someone to truly look up to in terms of technical skill and passion. Her life story is very similar to how I grew up and how I experimented with electronics other 'boys toys.' I always felt like an outcast for enjoying tinkering, be it with trebuchets or radios.

It really makes you question your role in society...especially when it seems that women are portrayed like idiots or dumb blondes in the media. Or that all I should care about is makeup, clothes, and hair (trust me I'm not that obsessed - just ask my husband). Sometimes even today I ask myself "what they hell am I doing?" "Why didn't I do elementary ed like every girl I know?" It is still something I struggle with even today.

I always wished I could have had another woman to look up and admire for their technical achievements. I almost never thought it would happen in my lifetime. Congratulations to her on her long list of achievements, and hopefully she can encourage another generation of woman to get into tech....especially engineering!!

I can't stand most women's magazines anymore, after reading technical books and magazines....it almost makes me gag when these woman don't have anything legitimate to complain about. Idiotic articles, training other young women that all they should be worried about it how fat they are and what kind of mascara doesn't run when skinny dipping or something stupid like that.

And I feel terrible about it because as being a woman, it makes me feel guilty to blame my fellow women as being idiots and prisses. Why can't you give yourself some credit and learn something useful? Hell, I'll even take traditional 'female' activities like sewing or knitting or something. Or you could go over the edge like me, and learn about Java and embedded systems during summer break ....go nuts!

I also read QST (amateur radio magazine) and Popular Science on a regular basis. I tend to read a lot of gaming magazines too. I don't think I'll be renewing my subscription to Popular Science. Too many articles about airplanes and idiotic devices. I need real world articles...like the recent article about FM in QST.

  4. Re:Collins Radio on Utility Cuts Short BPL Trial · · Score: 1
When I heard BPL was coming to Iowa and more specifically to to Cedar Rapids, I tipped my hat to Alliant and said "good luck with that." I still live in Iowa, and am very familiar with Cedar Rapids and its stupid 'toilet brush' statues.

Out of any other city or area in Iowa, or perhaps in the Midwest, if I had the choice of choosing a BPL test city, I would choose Cedar Rapids. Why? Because they are a hotbed for technology and have a large amount of very, very educated engineers and many of them have amateur radio licenses. Rockwell Collins is a major emplorer and designs and implements communication equipment for the DOD, Boeing, etc. So they know what they're doing, and the hams in that area I'm sure were monitoring every action made by Alliant in this test. I'm not shocked that they got the smackdown by an amateur radio engineer...in fact I was waiting for it to happen in the first place.

On a side note, as a paying member to the ARRL and my standing as an amateur radio operator, I EXPECT the ARRL to take interference and band threats seriously, that's their job. That's what I pay them to do....that and the neat QST articles.

  5. Iowa State represents on Intel Ranks Colleges with Best Wireless Access · · Score: 2
Suprisingly, ISU is number 20. I can't say I'm truly shocked as 802.11b APs are pretty much everywhere on campus, even a lot of outdoor areas are covered. The only problems I've run into is our NIC registration required called Netreg. Netreg gets pissy if you register a NIC (ethernet for example) with a computer name, and then try to get your wireless NIC working. The obvious workaround is to change computer names, and register (netreg).

I normally don't use a laptop in class, as most of my coursework (Electrical Engineering) requires the good ol' pencil and paper. But in my singular business class, I take notes on it and of course, browse /.

However, it is nice to go to the library or sit outside, do some homework, and google things on the fly.

  6. Driving is a Priveledge, not a right on Automobile Black Box Sends Driver to Jail · · Score: 1
I would just like to point out the fact that although most Americans consider the ability to drive a car to be an explicit right, in actuality it is a priveledge. A priveledge, that I believe, is too freely given to those that do not deserve it. But that is another topic for another day.

When you get in your car and drive on public highways, streets, etc. you do not have a right to privacy. Now if you are on private property, by all means...drive like a maniac. However, your fellow citizens should have the right to be as safe as possible. Using black boxes, cameras, and other technology is a good way of policing that and punishing those that are breaking the law and putting other people's lives in danger.
