Based on their respective histories, a sensible person would probably trust CCC over Apple.
Yes, I agree. No idea why this was modded "troll". There is a decent history to show that.
CCC: Did this before. They lifted the fingerprints of the German minister of Interior from a water glass and turned it into a little stamp so you can place him now at any crime scene. (The hack was actually to show just how idiotic government use of biometric data is).
Apple: I of course don't want to say anything negative against this good company, but some people might say that they have a history of over-hyping things.
Even if you're in the US, you can't watch certain shows on certain devices, such as XBox 360 or Roku. Their management lives in this 20 year old fantasy land where I'm going to go sit at my desk and watch something in my web browser.
No. It's exactly the other way around:
They know that most people wouldn't want to watch it sitting at their desk on their PC. They know that most people would prefer to watch hulu on their streaming device / android stick / whatever while sitting on the couch.
And that's exactly why the PC is free and anything that hooks up to a TV or media center costs money
Good point. The Peace Corps works outside the US, trying to improve life for people who are unfortunate enough to live in some other "country".
Code for America shouldn't be called 'Peace Corps for geeks' then, but rather Something like Teach for America... ...for people who can't teach ...for people who aren't people persons ... for guys
Supporting the international criminal court would be a good start as well. The US could use its power and intelligence agencies to support international tribunals against war criminals. - And wouldn't that be even stronger than any military threat: Making sure no war crime goes unpunished, ever.
People die sitting on the beach, people die eating chocolate ice cream. Why shouldn't anyone die while testing 9V batteries? AC didn't say that a 9V battery can kill someone, just stated that "In the UK 3 people die each year testing if a 9v battery works...." There's no because in that sentence..
Most likely while testing the 9V battery on their tongue they got hit by a 20 ton weight, stood next to an exploding bush or fell off the edge at Dover. Stuff like that happens in the UK all the times.
Erm, I think the Germans have been forced to repress the flag-waving, army-exporting, "We're better than everyone!" aspect of their culture,
Yes, but only the flag-waving, militaristic part of it.
Germans still think they are best at:
- having learned a lesson from their own history (which they are happy to point out to anyone who hasn't)
- being tolerant of others (Scandinavian countries, Dutch, and Belgians might be better)
- knowing about other cultures (Being better than the US doesn't make you best)
- visiting and learning about other cultures (eating Schnitzel at a Spanish beach pubs really doesn't count)
- being close to Mother Nature (American diplomats think otherwise)
- being quite modest despite being so great
I run a server at home because I don't just want web hosting. I want file hosting, email, remote desktop, music and video streaming, video games, and IRC to boot...
That works with ISPs that don't allow servers. The ISP doesn't care all that much about the servers you run, as long as you limit the access and don't run a public server, know what you're doing, and don't turn into a nest for spam and virus breeding.
Their Call Center people on the other hand are a different case. Never ever mention the word "server". Not even "display server". Just remember, that you don't run a server. You simply enabled remote access for that one file manager thing on your home computer. And that other port is open, because your thermostat app wouldn't work on your cellphone otherwise. No, not a server but a thermostat that has something built in, so I can change the temperature through my cell phone. File server? No, it's just my laptop connecting to my external hard drive that hangs on that pogo thing .
...often rely on trivial stuff like default passwords and what not. Even in 2013 there's lots of routers and similar equipment that are sold or configured in a state that isn't far from swiss cheese.....
Yeah, but what are the chances that someone named their kid "admin" and that kid would then go and accidentally try to login on your router using its name also as password ?!

This sounds like they have zero experience in application design, ... and are trying to micromanage the interface..
Most likely:
no
and yes
Sounds to me like designers talking. People who come from graphic design or ad-agencies and now do web design / interface design.
They usually want to micromanage the rendering. Because it has to look exactly as designed. Not just an interface with four buttons, but four buttons spaced in a perfectly pleasing way, perfect white space to text ratio, and please no substitute font! (Oh no, just the idea of that makes my black turtleneck crinkle.)
Didn't you get the memo? On Sept 11th 2001 the US stopped being a "free" country and is now a "safe" country.
So shut up about your worthless "freedom" and "constitution" and "rights" you terrorist defending traitor!
No,no. "Freedom" is fine, "Liberty" is a banned word.
Dunno why. But it must be part of new-speak. Freedom, Unity, Standing together, Defending our Freedom - all fine.
Liberty, Personal liberty, Dissent, Protest - baaad.
You see, as the widow of the late Jacob Bugarundi, minister of mining, I have been looking for assistance to kindly help me transfer money from secret diamond sales from my account to yours.
But after repeated attempts failed to contact trusted friends in Western countries, I now see new hope with good men Chinese investors.
'We're even imagining that in the future cars would be able to ask other cars, "Hey, can I cut into your lane?" Then the other car would let you in,' said Jennifer Healey, a research scientist with Intel."
(My emphasis)
Intel also makes parts for the CAN-bus. This is, so the car can say to the airbag "Ohoh, you better blow up now!"
They also make parts for weapons systems, but their research scientist said that you have to go to bed now, and they will explain that tomorrow using hand puppets.
they used to be where you go for news, but lots of start ups have taken over this function. AOL and a few other big companies host most of the internet's big blogs
But if start pages, web-portals, and animated gifs ever become popular again they will be there first.
Like the "you must tolerate my gratuitous abuse because I am more important than you" 'tude?
No. It's not gratuitous abuse, it isn't show of power, and Linus also doesn't throw chairs at people.
He just calls stupid ideas stupid ideas. Not "unfortunate" or "needs improvement" but "stupid". And while one might call him opinionated, he usually backs his positions up with an argument and reasons for it. And I strongly assume he would accept his own medicine back, as long as it is well reasoned and not just someone shouting "*fucking* I won't be a nice girl anymore"
It might be a cultural thing. A well educated American who thinks that you're an idiot won't tell you, but smile at you. Being frank is low-class.
The nice Midwesterners are the worst. The strongest disapproval they can amount to is "oh, that's different" or "interesting". Bostonians on the other hand are seen as rude. But while they might shout at you, they'd also stop their car at the pedestrian crossing, swearing if you don't cross fast enough. In Minneapolis, they'd smile at you while they run you over. I for once rather had the "rude" guy.
In theory, sarcasm detection can help with customer service,
So, if you know that your product/service is crappy and customers tell you that "you guys are just the greatest" the red sarcasm light will go on.
Ingenious! Nobody could have figured that out without software. You guys are just the greatest!

There is no causation between beer consumption and a "beer gut".

Linus in the sky with diamonds has always been my favo(u)rite.
