Sorry, forgot to use BR.
Anyway, I agree with you that a console is cheeper from scratch if all you want to do is play games. But, I don't like most console games (I like FPS and HALO sucked.) I like RPG's and FF sucks ect ect. And a PC has other uses.
I was just trying to make the point that for somone like me a console is not that cheep. Then again I gave my sister (12) a game cube and 6 games last xmas but that's beside the point... Or something.
Hmm, going to quit typing just say "I agreee with you."
I don't think it's that simple.
The older the console the shorter the life span. So say you have no console and no PC. AND NO TV. (I don't have one.)
When it's new I spend 300$ on a PS2. +50$ on a 2nd controwler + 50$ on a memory card + 300$ on a TV. (+ a keybord / mouse ?)
VS. 700$ on a PC + 300$ on a moniter you can go down to 50$ if you want but a 250 - 300 = a nice CRT.
You download a free DVD codec and buy a copy of windows XP 180$ and build a 500$ PC or buy a 680$ PC and a 10$ copy of windows from dell.
With the PC You can watch DVD's surf the net (10$-50$ a month) play several 100 games from day one make document's FREE text editer. ect ect.
With the PS2 + TV you can watch DVD's play PSI games or PSII games when they show up. You can also watch TV or cable 40$ - 120)
Now with the PSII you can play games for 5 years at which point you keep the TV.
With the PC you get 3years of FPS and 5 years for most other games. At which point you can keep the CRT.
(Now which one sounds like the best idea?)
But, for someone like me who needs a good PC it's a choice of a console every 5 years vs 200$ graphics cards ever 3 years so it works out about the same.
Yea, but the sounds your useing could be the voice of someone saying dodge or a bleap that works the same way it works the same. But, if you want to play Smash Brothers Melee with the sound on and vido off I will play ya with the sond off and the video on.
Basicly, I don't care how great the sound's are. But I notice how good the video is. In fact I dislike games that I need to play with the sound on.
Wow, you to are in difrent worlds. Software does not get better over time. Becouse, there are limit's to the way computers function.
Think of it like a zip file. You can make an algorithim that reproduces some pattern but if you feed it random junk it's going to toss it's hands in the air and say "I GIVE UP" and spit out a larger file than what you started with. Now what JPG / MP3 does is say I don't care about some things so I am going to ignore them. Which is a difrent way of thinking about these things but it does not get around the limit's of the hardware it's solving a difrent problem. What your missing is the idea that graphics is handled but a peace of hardware that can only do things is a set fastion. AKA a GPU can't play chess but it can send a lot of pixles to the screen. You can't drive across the ocean in a car and you can't tell a GPU to do things difrently.
Just a FYI graphics take vary little CPU time with most games. The do eat up memory and memory bandwith though. What eath's up CPU time in most games is eiter shity AI desgin or physics/game dynamics. But, with most games you DON'T want good AI becouse in most games if what your fighting has good AI it will own you.
AKA, X-BOX chess, RTS, FPS, or pong with a good AI will own 99% of payers out there.
What's fun is either escapeing into a world or dealing with beatable but interesting chalanges. Good AI and graphics will help with those goal's but there a small part of geting there.
So there outsourcing game development. Which is news because?
On a side note I think there trying to save money buy only hiring talent when they need them. So if the soundtrack is done they can save money by not having them hang around any longer ect. Then again it's hard to work with a development team that is constantly changing. I am going to vote for underpaid development teams working 80 hour weeks hoping for a success time will tell. VS. the consultant's that are just trying to rack up development but shout be interesting.
Yes *most* games don't need the latest hardware to run but you could always make a 600$PC it's the fact that a 600$ pc was less capable of running new games back in the day's when a P-1 133MHz was new.
To get the speed change from a 486-25 to a P1-133 you would need to jump from an Athlon 1.2GHz to a Athlon running around 8Ghz. Now would a 8Ghz athlon system seem faster than a 1.2GHz system... YES IT WOULD. But only if you got a balanced system with that lvl of spec's.
Would it cost 600$ to upgrade well when your talking about the P1-133mhz costing 2k I asume your talking about a full system upgrade which would have cost a lot less than 2k when the P1-133 was an old chip now when it was new it would cost somwhere around the 700$ Athlon 64 FX-53, 1MB L2 Cache beast than you would buy as a top end CPU. So build a chip with those specks and see how much it would cost ya.

OSS seems great when your in college and have tuns of free time, want to work on a real world project, and have no money to pay for things. But, as a life long hobby why not write software that will make you money?
Why do people think you need to spend 1000$ on a gaming PC. A 200$ graphics card works just fine other than that you get normal PC which does everything a normal PC does. A 500$ PC with a 200$ graphics card OWNS a X-BOX in just about ever stat memory cpu graphics card ect. The problem is people want to play a X-BOX at 640/300 and want the PC to run at 1200/1024 most of the time. Now the real advantage with a PC is that you don't pay microsoft money when you sell a game for the PC but they want there cut when you sell an X-BOX game.
And a PC comes with everthing you want where with an GameCube you buy a memery card. Want to watch DVD's with an X-BOX well we charge 1/2 the cost of a DVD player for the remote ect ect.

Grey goo does not work. Think about it, you can make a virus that will infect a system and thus get the materials and energy to replicate but where is the grey goo going to get it's materials from? How about energy? It's going to need to feed and do it better in every environment that the live that's been kicking around the globe for the last 4 billion years. If it's a simple system then random chance will have made it in the past AKA life. If it's complex then it's going to need a lot of time and energy to grow so it would take a long time to replicate. Think how long / hard it is to make a human vs a virus. What about more complex machines well if it's got many "cell's" working to gather then it's not a nano problem it's a macro problem. And it's going to have to deal with all the problems of multi celled organisms temperature, waste, canser, food, energy, viri.
So sure you can get a nano plague but not the old grey goo that eat's everything.
I don't know if that's funny or sad. The web is a small part of the Internet. And all he said was he "took the initiative" which could mean many things.
Such as seemed like a good idea to me so I gave them some money to set it up. Which is what I think he was talking about.
The hyper links / the web was a fairly old idea HTML is really a bastard son of STML which only missed out on hyper links because people did not want to add it to there existing code base. TextMarkupLanguages use 'Bracket' tag'endBracket' (stuff) 'Bracket'/tag'endBracket' as an extension of STML.
Anyway, the real idea behind the web was to write a free reader and a standard that read it as a solution to communication between dif people. Think PDF's the reader is free and useful so there a standard even tough it's not really an open standard. Which has nothing to do with the creation of the internet.
So next time you read that quote rember what's funny is people laughing at it not what he said. Ok Ok mabe he should have asumed most people would be like my parent and the people who modded it funny and not said it in the first place. But, I tend to forgive people who underestimate stupidity for it's endless.
The assumtion to RSA encription is that it's exponentualy harder to factior numbers as there size increases. AKA find prime A computation time N find prime B computation time N. Factor AxB into A and B takes N*N.
But, with quantom computers it might not take N*N as long. AKA if factoring a 128bit key takes as long as factoring a 256 bit key then RSA is useless.
What everyone seems to forget is while it does not take longer the signil strength decreases exponentialy. (AKA you build a 4 bit QM prototype and it works well an 8 bit part needs to be 16 times as sensitive. And you need to build it so it reads the entire number and factors it in one step. So someone builds a 128 bit QM then you need to have a 256bit QM which needs to be 2^128 times more sensitive.) AKA you can't factor the first 64 bit's of a number then the second 64 bit's...
Quantum cryptography is vulnerable to normal man in the middle attacks but there are more channels that need to be comprimised to pull it off.
If you intersept the Quantum stream it's detectible asumeing the other streams of comunication were not compromised. But, all forms of encription are vulnerable to man in the middle attacks if you use a well known encription scheem. (Could be wrong on this but if you disagree with me please give from of encription that works if ALL comunications were compromised. Not just the old well we can send a master KEY safely so we can then send our real key's.)
Basically you send 3x the data you need. For each bit you have say a one in 3 chance of reading the value correctly you then send back the photon's who's values you know. You then XOR the data you wish to send and with the values the other side knows and transmit those values out in the open.
If you get over 1/5 of the reads correctly then you know there is no man in the middle of the quantum channel. AKA they can only find out 1/3 of the values to know what to send you and you can only read 1/3 of those values so if you get 1/6th of the photons send there is a problem.
If you get a man in the middle of all communication channels it fails but so does RSA inscription. AKA if I read your key's I can decode the message and then re encode the message with my set of key's send it on and ditto for the back channel.
Make time sinks that lvl out with each expantion so that new people lvl faster than old people did though those lvls.
Aka zones that you need to do long quests to enter but lead no where. ect. This way you have the "best" players become more powerfull over time but casual players can meet any of there goals. Geting into the city of gremils takes 30 game hours. And there are 45 such city's. With several power rankings. Each zone / city has the best item of some type and ok stuff in the others. You can hit them all when they show up or skip over a few. It's all the same in the end. Basicly, people don't mind haveing people 2x there power in the world heck there playing 10x as much. What they mind is people playing 3x as much and being 40x there power.
It all comes down to game design. Are you a master potter? Ok now are you a grand master potter? Cool how about a Great grand master potter?
With each stage have skill up fast but the highest lvl's take farming or some such. Untill the new lvl's are added in which case the something show's up that makes it easer to lvl up to the old max power lvl.
What I think is missing is the idea that you can have a sword that's + 300,000 str or one that's + 30 str. It's all about what the game needs. Bronze kills ware wolves but gold kills putties. Yet mithrall kills them both. How about merchants that only trade in sertain types of coin? As the world advances you can keep changeing the old exchange rates and doing quests that give you some capital in the new curancy. But, the old power gamer only get's a 1/100 return on his exchange rate then again he can start over and kill x, y or z. But, that old capital is just not worth what it used to. He is always ahead but needs to keep playing to stay there. But, if you come back after 6 months you can start playing with your friends with in a month or so.

Ok 500 people got the same message from the same person ever hear of message bords? Or how about people that insert random quots into the message? Pick 100 cool quotes insert 5 of them at ramdom and the program can't tell what's real.
The only thing that kills spam is making it cost more your going to make from it. Or keeping them from geting your email address.
tricks to find spam #354 is it l33t speek? Ok what if you have lame friends? Simple trouth is people are a lot better at decoding messages than a machine ever will be and so you can't fix spam with filters.
Tell you what I am working on the whole spam thing. Till then why not email everyone your new email address and get 1% of the spam you were goign to get.
He is making an asumption about the value of an item were it not for a given use. Aka, I own a lot of oil it's great but what is it's value when fusion come into the market. Well I can use it to make plastic. But, it's value would only be x.
People try to predict markets based on there knowlage of the value of an item outside of the price of an item. Which is basicly a function of the use that hast the most value and is limited by it's production cost's and relative scarcity.
AKA dimonds are worth 1/4 of what people pay becose that's what people who are not makeing jewlry out of them will pay for dimonds that don't sparcle ect.
"it is not totally insane to invest in gems or jewelry. i.e., one can expect a resale market"
AKA it's not stupid to trust in the stupidity of others.
Hmm, Dimonds are basicly just carbon that's hard and shinny. Never got the whole *bling bling* think about them. Then again cash is just a paper so you realy can trust in the stupidity of others on some things.
Sorry folks, unless fusion is so amazing that we can throw away 75% of the energy produced to let the masses drive cars, the days of the automobile are numbered....
Honestly it its. The idea of fusion is to take matter and turn it into enerygy and we got a tun of it. Just look at the sun what % of it's energy reaches the earth? And think it can keep on doing that for a life span of 8,000,000,000 years. Granted it's freaking huge but It's realy hard to comprehend just how much energy is in mater. One 200lb person has more potental energy (in matter) than 1,000,000 tuns of TNT in chemacal.
With fustion the only limit is the value of the energy. If it costs 1000$ to make all the energy you car will ever need then it's worth it. And you can keep on doing that for 1,000,000 years and you don't run out of fule.

Ok hiting the sun sucks. So why not just hit Jupiter and be done with it? Afterall we have sent a fair amount of stuff there and it's not like we are going to be living there any time soon.
HUGE energy amounts to bring them down the graivty well to the surface....
Not realy you don't care if the hit the earth at high speed so just drop em fast and hot. Or make stuff out of them in orbit. one tun of iorn on earth may not be worth much but 2000lb's at 200$ - 3,000$ an LB to LEO would be worth something. Shuttle cost's more than a singel use solid rocket so that's why I say 3000$. OK now you got Stuff in LEO ok make a factory up there. OK now use that to make 10 facory's up there each of which make what you want. OK now start makeing those probes in LEO and sendingthem on there way. (You can make the CPU's down here a 200$ cpu costs a lot more than the cost to get it into orbit.)
As to energy costs Yea to move a tun of stuff from the astroid belt to earth would take a lot of energy but solar sails and or ion drives can give you that energy from the sun. Who cares if it takes 30 years to get here just get your 30 LB probe to take a 1tun object from there to LEO and you can work with that. Distance does not realy matter in space it's all about time and delta V.
However, if you want gold I think extracting it from see water would be cheeper in the end.

So over the next 100million years something has to stop 3% of the sun's energy from reaching earth that otherwise might... Not a big deal if humans are still around but kind of hard for mice to do.
However, the idea that the worlds oceans would boil over 3% increase in heat is not realy vary likely. Ocean's are not going to change much untill the atmasphere starts to disapate. Which an increase in overall heat would start but, while a decrease of say 50% would be a bitch for humans over a few 100million years not a big deal for life on the plainet.
If all water on the planet is 60 C then life will adapt. ect ect.
Hell oxegen was a bitch for most forms of life for quite a while but hehe we love that shit.
When sending robots you get to send 200 missions vs just 1. So while a human might beable to use a pick and a hammer to break off larger chunks..
Robot 1 brings a pick.
Robot 2 brings a shovel.
Robot 3 brings a crowbar. ...
Robot 148 brings a lasor drill.(braks)
send robot 149 with a lasor drill. (brakes)
send robot 150 with a lasor drill. (worked)
Robot 151 fly's around mars rideing thermals and takeing high rez photos looking for erotion....
When a human lands on mars there going to need backups when a robot lands on mars backups come on the next trip if there needed and if there not THEY ARE NEVER SENT.
If a microsope breaks on mars there going to break out there backup if there backup breaks they are out of luck.
The could send larger robot that last longer and move further but there is little point. You want a robot on the other side of mars you send one there. Shure a human may get 200 mil from there lander on a 20 day trip. But, there is little point to wasting that much time when you can just send a robot there for 365*2/20/2000 1.8% of the cost. make that 2000 mil and the humans CANT GET THERE.
Trouth is mars is not going to change much if your wandering around the rainforest you learn asmuch from looking at one tree for a week as you would looking at 7 trees for one day each. Mabe the first 50 robots suck and only 30 make it what hapends when your astronots lander fails and the burn up on entry?
yeas a 400billion mission to mars is going to be worth more than a.2 billion robot on mars. But, do you think 400 bil is worth more as a 2 year trip by 7 humans or 2000 robots spending 2 months wandering 500 meters from there landing sight anywhere on mars they want to go. I am all for a trip to mars but I want to go when humans can spend 20 years there. And build a home for others so that your future trips to mars will not need to send oxigen ect ect and it will get cheeper over time. Then we can send them the tools they need to inspect that rock... with unmand one way rockets.

Is that spam or not?
"it is not totally insane to invest in gems or jewelry. i.e., one can expect a resale market" AKA it's not stupid to trust in the stupidity of others.
So while a human might beable to use a pick and a hammer to break off larger chunks..
...
Robot 148 brings a lasor drill.(braks) ...
.2 billion robot on mars. But, do you think 400 bil is worth more as a 2 year trip by 7 humans or 2000 robots spending 2 months wandering 500 meters from there landing sight anywhere on mars they want to go.
Robot 1 brings a pick.
Robot 2 brings a shovel.
Robot 3 brings a crowbar.
send robot 149 with a lasor drill. (brakes)
send robot 150 with a lasor drill. (worked)
Robot 151 fly's around mars rideing thermals and takeing high rez photos looking for erotion.
Mabe the first 50 robots suck and only 30 make it what hapends when your astronots lander fails and the burn up on entry?
yeas a 400billion mission to mars is going to be worth more than a
I am all for a trip to mars but I want to go when humans can spend 20 years there. And build a home for others so that your future trips to mars will not need to send oxigen ect ect and it will get cheeper over time. Then we can send them the tools they need to inspect that rock... with unmand one way rockets.
