The idea of a lasor defence system is to burn a whole in a missile causing suficent damage that it would cause the solid rocket fule to explode, alter it's flight path or prevent it's cargo from functioning.
If your going to try to hit it in orbit:
Then your not going to efect a balistic mistile with light unless you can deform it's shape enof to change it's course by more than 100 miles. Now that's going to get a hel of a lot harder mid flight than at the begining.
The fule is spent by this point so your stuck with distroying the cargo. Which consists of several independent systems all being distroyed at the same time or the lauch mechinism being taken out.
Ok so you have a system that is able to do all of this just fine how long is this going to take to eat though say one inch of plate steel? Ok now if it's spining at say 1200 RPM that's 20 full rotations every second say we are dealing with a one inch beam and the rocket is 10foot in diamiter that's 376 inches per second of motion which means the beam that needs 1/1000 of a second to eat though one inch of steal would need to be twice as powerfull to efect this system. Granted if it's 1/2000 of a second it a fairly long period of time many systems can do that orders of magnitude faster but it still prevents many systems from working aka realy tight beams like 1/20th of an inch have to be 1/20,000th of a second or faster.
Now as to mirros there not going to oxidize just set them behind glass / somthing that lets that frequency of light though and use that to protect your reflective substance. Don't forget there is a huge number of systems that can reflect light "mirros are one but what about scatering the beam rather than reflecting it?
And don't forget you can combine these with a larger hull aka 1200RPM 2inch hull that is 95% refective your now talking a about a much harder problem. And don't forget you need to be somthing like 95% efective or you still die.

Now I get in at 8ish and start up my pc check my e-mail open the project read the documentation and wow it's 8:45 time for the morning meeting. Great now it's 9am and I am ready to go... Great work till 12:00 and hmm hungry time to grab some food. Cool well join a coworker or 2 and well it's 1:00 and I am back at my desk ready to finish up but... I only really worked from 3 hours but now I can't remember what I was doing... Ok well great it's 4pm and things are once again flowing but suddenly coworker X shows up and would like to know what this speck means so... Ok great it's 4:15 and I am back at my desk but dammit the code is not compiling and I can't remember what that pointer was doing anyway. Hmm, well damm it's 6pm and I am still not done well it's close I could stay here and finish or go home.
Now I could go home come back the next day and spend the rest of the day hoping to finish. OR stay here till it's done in 3 more hours? Well if I go home chances are I will spend most of the day finishing up.
The real reason why coders code at night is they can spend as much time as they need coding while being left alone. WHY? Well think of it this way after every interruption you have to remember not just what you where doing but why you where doing it and more importantly why you where not doing something else. So 6 uninterrupted hours at night tend to be worth 20 normal workday hours.
While I have stoped pirating softwhere I can tell you the cost of a 50$ game to a college student represents a fair amount of cash. So even at 5 hours of work your still geting paid 10$ an hour which is better than what most college students make. Once you start thinking about that as the basis of what a pirate is willing so spend to not buy your game your going to reolise that you just can't win. Thinking about Diablo II represented a great "pirate" example now I got it the day it came out. As did a few of my friends. But, several other people in our circle lacked the cash to buy it so we installed it on there pc's and downloaded the no CD crack after ever a new patch came out.
There is basicly nothing that can be done to prevent this type of piracy. As a software company your not alowed to distribute "fake" cracking software that messes with there pc's. Nor are you alowed to disable there pc's once there using it so you can diaable the game but anything that disables some verifiable function can be sorce code patched (excluding DRM in the OS ect). Now what make DII work was the relms an online world whre you had to have a valid CD key to enter. More than one person with the same CD Key on at the same time then they can deal with it. Which caused most of the players to buy the game once we stoped all playing on the same LAN.
Now DII was just about broke even when it came to piracy those damm install diskes kept geting lost / broken and so over I ended up buying DII about 3 times which made up for all the "pirates" in fact most of the pirates ended up buying a copy becouse the hastle was not worth it.
Ok that's the good but what about the bad. Afterall we have all watched a movie or played a game where aftwerword we said Damm. Well in most cases the company has already goten your money so your F*** but with a little piracy one of your friends tells the non pirate to leave it be. And sudenly piracy is hirting the company. OK, well like most people I don't think of this as a bad thing but as long as company's think of customers as somthing to be tricked into buying there product they will alwasy be people who lose money from piracy.
I think the idea of making a game and selling it for 50$ when it's only got a 50/50 chance of being worth plaing for 12 hours or so is a flawed model. I say make 1 FPS game enine and then make 30 well scriped plots with it. sell em for 20$ a pop and you will have tuns of people willing to pay for em. But aslong as company's think one engine one game there is going to be way to many things that can go wronge and piracy will hirt a lot of companys with shitty products.

Or just use force feed back. You could even improve on the old methiod by making it somewhat exponental aka it's easy to move when not cuting things but get harder when your cuting and takes a fair amount of force to "tear" somthing. aka doctor can tell when there cuting somthing as aposed to riping tisue.

If you want the best % of drive utilization go for raid 5. It works by Striping the data across 2 drives then XORing the data on the 3rd drive. But, you need 3 drives. Raid 1 works with only 2 drives but you only get 1/2 the data basically each drive has an exact copy of the data that the other drive has.
Put simply if you don't have a lot of data to store but you want it safe go for raid 1 with small drives you end up with the same data storage as one drive but it takes 2 drives. If you have a lot of data to store go for raid 5 you get twice the data storage of one drive but you use 3 drives.

Could this be the big one? Is 'the big one' ever going to happen?
Look earthquakes can and do happen. But as to the 'Big One' idea well I hate to be the one to point this out but the reason why that area is above sea level is because it floats so no earthquake can change that fact or sink it. As to moving out in the ocean yea it's going to happen but You me, our kids, our grand kids and our great great great great grand kids are going to be dead before that strip of land moves one mile from where it stand. And it's going to be a LONG time before 'the big one' that takes the last part of California out into the ocean.
As to these earth quakes prediction a large earthquake well if you keep saying it's going to happen your going to be correct once and wrong 1000's of times. I think we are going to see a 6.8 +/-.1 some time between March 26, 2005 and March 28, 20005. So yea I am going to be correct but is that useful... sure if your building something but as to taking a vacation to miss an earthquake well I suggest moving.
Hmm, the point of what I was saying was while "there is some left / right brain devides but the most things are split fairly evenly across the brain EX: vistion"
Which is basically saying: "both sides of the brain DO support some of the functions of the other. and of course some functions are shared
I was trying to point out why it's incorrect to say "The left side is the logical, analytical, and symbolic side of the brain. It deals with things like language, math, and object identification.", "The right side of the brain is much more holistic." or "While the left brain is saying that the eyes, nose, lips, ears, cheeks, and chin all look just fine and consist of the components of a "face", the right side of the brain is telling you that something major is wrong." as the parent poster to my first comment was saying.
In many ways my major objection to the whole right-brain left-brain idea is the concept that it limits "logic" to one side of the brain. And then say's wow look at the other half we can use to be "holistic" (WTF does that mean? do you reanalyze everything you just looked at?). Where when you get down to it ever cell in the brain is capable of making a desisting and, things like "thought" and "perception" are the combinations of huge numbers of decisions rather than some the result of some magic box that takes place over there which we can never know how it works. Which is an outgrowth of my dislike of the term "holistic" which is often used by people as a way of saying "I don't know the details but my assumptions lead me to believe this regardless of the evidence which is in consequential to my world view after all I am looking at the WHOLE picture and therefore I can't be wrong."
Hmm, sorry that's starting to sound like a rant so I will stop now.

(5 points)
Ok, mabe it's just me but the author finds it 4x more important to be able to compile and execute the comand than having a debugger of some sort I mean wow if it's that important maby he should write some sort of script to handle that for him.
And wow that's a lot of TD's out there maby under Program Lengths by Language. Then again maby when we find somone who can figure out that the "ease of converting between numbers and strings" is less important than say noticing that your string doe not contain a number. "10l0" is realy the same as "RED" so who cares right.
PS: If you want to compare scripting lanuages try writing somethign that does a grep search for "GET A CLUE" with files of the format USEFULL*INFO## and then sort's the output by the number of ocurances of "FuncoLand" instead of writing hello world is as few chariters as posible.
FYI the whole left brain right brain idea is full of shit. The corpus colosum (sp?) does not have the bandwith to integrate the mind all that well so there is some left / right brain devides but the most things are split fairly evenly across the brain EX: vistion
Yea there is a TUN of pre proscessing in before the brain get's the immage (more like a 3d model of the world with some guesses as to motion and some textures on the object's than an immage) But try this; close one eye and pick up an object with your right hand. Ok now toss it up in the air and catch it with the other hand great now do the same thing but while the object is in the air change witch eye is open. Now, you can do this but at first it seams realy strange. This is much harder than say blinking one eye as you toss the item in the air. The reason for this is EACH side of the brain is involved in crating an intergrated perception of the world.
Which may be a round about way of proving demonstrating it but perception is NOT a left brain creates a world vew right brain integrates that wold view like you just postulated.
On the broauder point of a preception threashold where you start to notice how far from a normal face a GC image is shure I would agree with you. Aslong as the "face" is not close enof to a real face your brain things ok that is probably a face but once it starts to get close your brain thinks ok that is a face but it is also probably a face of someone that is realy sick. Afterall a healthy person's skin would never look like that... ick
The only problem with your theory is that the human lifespan has already been extended, by a lot.
What is "normal life span"? 35 years, as it was hundreds of years ago? 50? 75?
Some people hit 80years 2000 years ago. Nobody has ever hit 200. Just as I don't remeber much from when I was 10 I don't think I will rember all that much from year 40 at year 150.
" A thirty-five year old couple can conceive a perfectly healthy, perfectly youthful baby... how is that?"
The simple trouth is something like 1/2 of my sperm on not heathy enough to produce a child so the female body provides a contest to see which of them are the most fit to produce a new child. (Think how far the little buggers need to swim) Now if you could somehow remove my cells as they stop being fit then you just cured the root couse of canser and we can then let your cells endlessly reprduce. Till then there is not much we can do to remove the root couse of aging aka a methiod to avoid canser.
FYI if you really don't understand evolution it's all based around one idea. "If it works keep it if not drop it"
So working from simple ideas:
"How did a simple but robust single-cell organism spontaneously "evolve" into a more complex multi-cell organism?"
There are muli celled organisms which are basically just round balls of photosensitive cells. To get from single cells to them all it takes is for them to arrange themselves next to each other as they split apart as they grow. Why would they do this well maybe because if they form a ball then most of the cells get as much light as possible.
As to complex think of this round ball of cells if it can keep it's self full of water then it can survive as the water around it evaporates. Now while it my work well with one layer of cells 2 layers would make a barrier so it can survive harsher changes to it's averment. Perhaps this is not as efferent most of the time but if they survive in places where the others can't then that's all that will be in that place. And on and on it goes till trees are blocking out the sun from the forest floor. There tall so they can get sunlight before anything else can. It's an arms race that start's with lichen and goes up though grass shrubs and trees with many many many stops along the way.
This basic tenant more complex = better able to survive over the long term explains why you can go from ocean only cells floating around to more complex things. As to animals (things that eat plants) it's a basic arms race those things that eat plant's need to survive where the plant's are and be able to eat them while the predators hunt them. ect ect. As long as you don't die out you keep adapting to the changing conditions till you get to "smart" animals that learn to adapt quickly. Aka fly's run away from motion but flock animal sick together to find food and avoid being eaten.
As to sex it's useful. Think of this you're a bacteria you have 10,000,000 children 99.999% of which are the same as you but 100 of them are different than you in some way. Now if you keep competing with each other then you go though cycles where one of those children will out bread the rest and "win" but if you start exchanging genetic information (bacteria do this) then the bacteria that change are more likely to survive. AKA if you can't beat em join em. Now sex forces this exchange of genetic information so it's useful but where would it come from? Mutli celled organisms at some point they stop growing and have kids now when this happens they want the advantage of shared genetic information so maybe they start by having random extra genetic information. But the ones that developed "sex" are better able to share genetic wealth over time aka if this trait is really only useful one year in 100 and 1 out of 100,000,000,000 of your population has it then that trait can spread when it's useful and stick around while it's harmful. Your also not getting random genetic information your garneted to get it from something that lived long enof to have "sex" with you. You lose some useful traits but that's always going to happen it's just better than blind chance so your species get's better than random chances to keep on surviving.
"Sperm" is just a packet of genetic information that allowed this organism to survive this long enof to give you that packet of genetic information.
As to finding a mate it was probably incest. And it probably started with a hermaphrodite. (think earth worm) which had only one side of the equipment. But, the side of the equipment it had was somewhat random. So now it has 20kids and because it worked can have kids with either there siblings or the normal hermaphrodite... ect ect. As to why it's useful think of it this way a male can have lots of sex but a hermaphrodite only does so once. There fore you can have a small percentage of the "best" males aka those who don't just survive but rather thrive have lots of kids.
It might not have even been the most u
It's the fossil carbon he's talking about. NOX compounds are a pain but it's the CO2 that's causing global worming. So with biodiesel your extracting the carbon from the air vs the ground so the amount of carbon in the air stay's the same.
From what I can tell there not manufacturing solar cells using "lead selenium nanocrystals" but rather they found a method of detecting "impact ionization" via the delay between the photon impact and electron emissions. They then tested several substances and discovered that lead selenium nanocrystals produced impact ionization on close to 100% of photon impacts.
So if you really want to know what's going on you need to discover how efferent lead selenium solar cell's are and what it takes to mass produce lead selenium nanocrystals in a cheep long lasting solar cell.
So it's a long way from producing 60+% efficient solar cells but it's still cool.
The tests show that bump-ridged flippers do not stall as quickly and produce more lift and less drag than comparably sized sleek flippers.
...
The row of tubercles sheers the flow of water and redirects it into the scalloped valley between each tubercle, causing swirling vortices that roll up and over the flipper to actually enhance lift properties.
This sounds like the same effect that Honeybee's use, but I can't help but wonder what range of wind speeds this works for. My guess would be this is only useful for subsonic aircraft. Even if the effect were limited to say 1/2 the speed of sound there are plenty of aircraft that could benefit from this. If anyone can find a link which gives the conditions required for this effect that would be great until then I am going to assume it's not gong to work on a 747. Although some cessnas's might end up with bumpy wings.

Your, faith is not the same as that of the big old JC. Mabie you have given up on the whole burning people at the stake thing but honestly read some of the old testemnet and think how well this fits with our world view. EX: bear eat's kids who sas a priest.
I have a stronger moral fiber than most of my friends who beleve in god, I make more money. The first has to do with my upbringing the second intelegence and the desire to avoid hard work and retire early.
I have considerd helping humanity out but can you think of somthing that will help people out in 100 years? how about 100,000? I think science might help them out but I don't think I am going to contribute much to it. So I invest in teck avoid fucking the enviernment raw dog and write software. I look for ways to make the system better so there will be more resorces to make the system better. It's not a "purpose in life" just a habit.
PS: As to your view on "god" did you ever wonder why we feel pain? I mean noticing that your causing damage to your hand becouse it's in the fire is one thing but why did "god" make that hirt? Sciene / evolution ansers that and many other questions just fine...
That world work untill someone patches your EXE to deactivate your code somewhere around 12 hours after you release your product. Also, would only work on systems conected to the net EX: my linux-tivo device. It records and plays back tv WTF would I conect it to the net it can't change the chanel so there is no point in using it to get chanell listings as the tv does that. (Direct TV)
Or just use force feed back. You could even improve on the old methiod by making it somewhat exponental aka it's easy to move when not cuting things but get harder when your cuting and takes a fair amount of force to "tear" somthing. aka doctor can tell when there cuting somthing as aposed to riping tisue.
I would die if I could prevent this law from ever taking efect anywhere from now till the end of time.
Now the problem is you can't do that you can only help things along for a little while and hope your (or someones) children do the same thing when the time comes.
I said it floats I did not say it floats on the ocean. Thanks for playing but ya lost that reading comprehension test.
Now we can say it floats, it floats on magma or the fact that the weight of the ocean + the weight of the rock under it float's on magma in such a fastion that the less dence land floating on magma is in a state of balance.
PS: I am just messing with ya. I should have been more clear.
Is 'the big one' ever going to happen?
.1 some time between March 26, 2005 and March 28, 20005. So yea I am going to be correct but is that useful... sure if your building something but as to taking a vacation to miss an earthquake well I suggest moving.
I think we are going to see a 6.8 +/-
Hmm, the point of what I was saying was while "there is some left / right brain devides but the most things are split fairly evenly across the brain EX: vistion"
Hmm, sorry that's starting to sound like a rant so I will stop now.
under Tools:
compilation and execution in one command (20 points) vs
debugger (5 points)
" A thirty-five year old couple can conceive a perfectly healthy, perfectly youthful baby... how is that?" The simple trouth is something like 1/2 of my sperm on not heathy enough to produce a child so the female body provides a contest to see which of them are the most fit to produce a new child.
So it's a long way from producing 60+% efficient solar cells but it's still cool.
just a guess but...
in a lot of constituencies it is not the most popular candidate who wins, but the most powerful.
"It helps when you criminalize the same hard working immigrants today, that your grandparents"
???
It sounded pro immigrants to me. Then again I could be missing somthing.
