  1. Where will the money go? on Mario Monti Fines Microsoft 100 Million? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Assuming that they do fine Microsoft and Microsoft does pay, where will this $100 million go?

Will it just go into the EU's wallet or will it go to promote/help alternative OSs? I think that Microsoft definitely has some retribution in store but I think it's important that countries don't look at Microsoft as a blank check that they can use for their purposes.

The money needs to back to the source (i.e. the alternative OSs that were hurt).

(I couldn't get to the article because of the necessary subscription so this might be addressed there.)

You are aware that it's a driver for the wireless technology and not actual cpu right? Last I checked (though it's been a while) AMD didn't integrate wireless into the mobile processors. So either way you'll have to buy a third party card if you want wireless.

I had a AMD notebook and it barely got an hour of battery time. I hear their newer generation of mobile processors are supposed to be better but I have heard that the centrino's still out preform the AMDs and use less power.

    I'd still go centrino.

Yeah, I don't think that ever happened. That would require landing on mars which we have all seen is difficult in itself but would also require taking back off from Mars. That would probably be more difficult then landing. It would require making it land with enough fuel to take off and get back to earth making it much more dangerous. It would also require more then twice the amount of fuel then a one way mission would. And if it costs near 100 million to take off from earth just think what it would cost to take off from mars.

I seem to remember reports of fossilized bacteria found in meteorites or something like that. I really doubt that it was from mars.

Everyone would benefit from switching because of the extra registers in 64-bit mode and the low-latency memory controller. Some people have said they got a 10-20% speedup just from recompiling in 64-bit mode without making any changes to their code.

Seriously though, how many "regular" computer users have access to the source code for their applications or would even know what to do with it if they did.

This is great for universities and research facilities that use either their own software or open source softeare. I'm sure a lot of people will buy it out of ignorance just because of the salesman or just to have the biggest and best. But before it becomes really mainstream, you are going to have to have the 64-bit windows (not sure if it is available or not) and a decent selection of 64-bit commercial software.

Looks pretty good. I still don't think there is a huge demand to have these in desktops as of yet. P4s are still very powerful and still compete with AMDs 64 bit chips. Even the Athlons are enough for most people to play the newest games and all.

I don't think that most people do the really computer intensive tasks that would benefit from 64bit chips plus the lack of truely 64 bit software that will give them this advantage is a hinderance as well.

I think it will be 2005 or maybe even 2006 before 64 bit chips become the standard.

While this is a very useful feature, it is by no means unique to OW. Even IE has had this feature for several years. I believe that Firebird has a similar feature as an extension but I may be mistaken.

My biggest problem with this feature is that when you come up with a lot of different search engines, I tend to forget what the shortcuts are. I prefer just setting them in Firebird's search bar. It requires you to take your hands off the keyboard but that method works better for me.
