Has America Given away its edge on tech?

In our greed soaked quest for the allmighty dollar we have outsourced so much of our tech savy to "cheaper" sources that we now depend on others for our critical infrastructure. If too many other countries were to gang up on us all at once and refuse to sell US things they found "dangerous" we'd be finished. We depend on so many countries to supply tech for us, and this is what has made our security dubious. Any one remember the old days when the us could make everything for its safety?
No I don't want to absolved of all responsibility,(so far 7 years only minor infections that were quickly caught, thank god) but if the last worm caused the power outage and THEIR ADMIN didn't catch it what is some rinky dink course gonna do for all of the unwashed masses. See my point? These worms and viruses get into companies and sites run by a dedicated admin, useing virus scrrens and firewalls because of the software holes left by the vendor. They dont claim any responsibility for their product, why should we?
I agree, and that isnt the point. The point is "we" are doing what would be millions of dollars worth of computing for free, while someone walks away with a multi billion dollar patent(if in fact the genome is found, cancer cured etc.). If there was some way to ensure any results were to be public domain id be all over it. But lets face it, "ain't" gonna happen that way. As for SETI@home, just having my name attached to a discovery would be cool for me, not "fair and balanced" but I don't care!!
I guess, but id still be right! What would they pay? My guess is pennies a work unit. What does that compare with the HUNDREDS of BILLIONS that a cancer cure would be worth?
I would agree, but with the horrid state of managed health care in the US I wonder if id even have access to the cure were it available. The other point id like to make is that the PROFIT made in cancer is treatment! Would we even be aware of a cure if it existed? What would the pharmacutical co's profit if cancer was cured and they couldnt put you on a 100,000 dollar course of chemo?
While I run seti@home because its something positive to believe in, I won't run these other programs for one simple reason PROFIT. Most of these other programs doing a lot of big time number crunching on things that are probably going to be patented(well except the global warming thing) and they want US to do their work for them. Will we share in the profits..highly doubtful
Well I feel I pay my licence fee EVERY FREAKING MONTH when my 37.00 cable bill is paid. We pay every time a piece of software is bought! If the onus is on any one to close the massive freaking holes the hackers exploit it should be the SOFTWARE companies like "Microsoft". Why? because they knowingly leave big security holes in their product just so they can rush a new version to market every six months
I have an Idea....Instead of throwing money at NASA lets feed and house our people, ensure seniors have the drugs they need and educate our children.I love the space program but this sounds like pork at its worst! a better use of space money would be funding the near earth object program.
I dont think there is going to be a good answer to this one. On one hand we need some way to track down fraud, spammers and kiddie pornsters BUT there is the rest of us, who just don't want everyone to know our home phone number, address and the like. Although as stated several times you can get a post office box or use a service or just flat out lie to hide your info, most people just dont have the knowledge(how many cam girls have gotten some serious trouble with stalkers because of whois?) to do this when their putting up a domain for personal use. It seems that the net is a fact of life now so we need to start teaching it in school,
Oh yeah I forgot to add...why would anyone buy a service that basically leaves you wide open to lawsuits? If you're paying for it they should sanitize their network to remove infringeing content! Id rater get sued for free...thank you muchly
Damn straight... He COULD HAVE
stolen identities, money and
ruined lives
He didn't. BUT he did embarass some 100+k a year security hack for the times, andfor that he will go down! I dont believe he did 300+k worth of damage to the Times...I believe its standard practice to claim large monetary losses to get the feds involved. Kill a kid go free, hack the times go to jail. Isn't "justice" wonderful
My isp (adelphia) only recently allowed home networks in its TOS. previously if you had 2 computers in your home they wanted you to pay for two accounts. I had a coworker who called the isp(which also provides our cable tv) for some cable service. When the service arrived he spent some time snooping around saying they detected some signal leekage from the house when the service guy saw the wireless router he asked "so your stealing a connection heh?" then he pulled out the TOS and had the guy billed for two accounts retroactive from the account start date. eventually the bill was dropped? why? Because someone sued adelphia for not allowing users to network within their own home. there is a provision in the cable deregulation bill that allows for a subsciber to hook up several units in their own home. point of this is the isps are evil too..ya gotta watch em like a hawk!

Hey thanks...I have an above average case of keyboarditis
