The problem isn't that you can't get another browser, the problem is that you can't safely remove IE from windows. The problem i have with office is the way they have used it to choke out competition and even went as far as spreading anti OO.o FUD
Remember that any language unable to access.NET goodies such as garbage collection is going to be quickly marginalised

I did not mean that to be derogatory towards foreign programmers, it has alot more to do with the fact that it is hard to translate needs from english.buisness to english.programming. anything complex enough to not already exist and require significant funds is complex enough that the spec you give the outsourced programmers will translate wrong, Garbage in garbage out
a little OT, Were you trying to install Lindows on the eMachines computers mentioned above? If so i would recommend Fedora, which has worked beautifully on both my new eMachines computer (T2200se) and old one (533id2), although the 533id2 was heavily altered, a ton more RAM as well as a better sound card (The crystal audio integrated card sucked under windows, never tried it in linux).
If something could actually match Windows in terms of usability, it would create big waves. OS X, Microsoft does work to force people to buy MS products, or do you think that keeping the Office formats a moving target since 95 was just a game the dev team played 'cause they were bored, or binding IE so tight to the OS that it cannot be removed without killing critical parts like windows update.
as opposed to the certain failure after X rewrites that makes flash drives worthless for use on a swap partition(*nix) or partition containing a swap file(windows)

that may be true but they sure as hell didn't release info to make interoperability easier
well anyone who wants to can go recompile KDE with their own program in place of windows, if MS catches you "recompiling" they would sue/prosecute you
