  1. New Distribution Methods on Will This Genie Ever Go Back In The Bottle? · · Score: 1
The recording industry needs to come up with a new method for distributing/sharing copyrighted material. Rather than kill off sites or programs that distribute copyrighted material they should use it to their advantage. Distributing things over the internet has a much lower cost than producing physical media which would result in a much lower cost to consumers. You do however need to preform the following things if artitist are going to make their money and consumers will benifit

    1. Prevent any copying of material that would be a copyright infrigement.
    2. Make it very easy to lend songs, books, movies etc... to your friends in a way that ensures you lose your lisence until the media is lent back or some amount of time elapses. Same as lending your friend a physical book or movie.
    3. Reduce the cost of media.
The concept of having a licence and what it entitles you to is the same, but the method of distribution, sharing, and price must be changed.
  2. Good Thing Windows is Not Subject to These Attacks on Linux Blamed for DDoS Attacks · · Score: 1

It's funny how the article says that Windows is not subject to these attacks. Windows is just subject to its own bad design ;). If Windows were subject to these attacks, they would choke much quicker than they already do on their own. I think that the author needs to get a clue and do more concrete research before writing articles like this.

  3. What is the Difference on EU Competition Commission Investigating Win2k · · Score: 2

I have been using Windows 2000 for a couple weeks now and I can see some nice things that have been done, but nothing to warrent a major investigation. The internals of the OS are very much a melding of win98 and winNT with some more nice features. IE is integrated into it but that was true for windows 98 also. Nothing in windows 2000 locks you into using a mirosoft only setup. In fact I was able to get my winmodem to work on 2000 and have my linux box use it as a gateway. Until now I was only able to connect at 14.4 but I still have the option to go back to my linux box as my gateway.

The article did not even elaborate on what parts of win2000 made them belive that it would increase the MS strangle hold. Does windows 2000 realy change things that much? In my personal view, no. The only reasson that Microsoft may extend their power is because for once they were actualy able to create a decent product.

  4. You Have to Draw the Line Somewhere on Corporate Websites and the Lack of Accessibility · · Score: 2
I am by profession a web page design/developer and there are times when you need to draw the line for accessability. Trying to make your site work on every browser in every language while maintaing a decent look and feel is imposible, but the ALT tag is one of the eaisiest and important things that needs to go into a page. How long or how much intelegence does it take to say ALT="... ...". What is the rational for this company not including these tags? It would probably take one person with minimal knowledge of HTML a day, if that to put some good ALT tags in.

I always go by the following rules when designing a site. Of course it sometimes depends on who you are developing for and the function of the site but these are my basic guidlines.
    1. Always include the ALT HEIGHT and WIDTH tags for images.
    2. Never use javascript for navigation of the site or its functionalitly.
    3. Try not to use frames.
    4. Unless absolutly nessiscary do not make your pages bigger than 40k.
    5. Do not assume that your visitors have their monitors set to 640x480 or 1600x1200 or ... Too many sites are designed for the monitor size that it is being developed on.
    6. ....
The 2 reasons for doing the previous things are for faster load times and accessability. The list could go on forever but these are the important ones. Please reply and add if I have missed any.

I wish slashdot had a speell checker ;)
  5. Inital Offering is $14 on "The Word" from E*Trade About the RH IPO · · Score: 1

I just went to the IPO section of E*Trade and found the folowing E*TRADE is now accepting new Conditional Offers in the Red Hat IPO. This issue has been priced at $14 and has been declared effective but minutes latter this was posted E*TRADE is no longer accepting new Conditional Offers in the Red Hat IPO. Now I am no expert at this but doesn't this seem like a rather short amount of time to have a conditional offer?

Also this means you will need to have $1400+ in your e-trade account to Get the inital 100 shares nessicary for an IPO offering. I would be realy PO off if I put $1200 in an E*Trade account only to find out that I needed $1400 to get in on the IPO. Not to mention the fact that the price was bumped the day of the IPO.

  6. You need deep linking on Deep Linking Troubles Continue · · Score: 1

If you do not allow deep linking the site will be unable to keep there users to even look at banner ads. If it takes more than 3 clicks to get to the information the end user wants, they have hit the back button the and left your site. In this case if the movie is not within the 3 click range, more that 50% of the users will not see it and not look at banner ads. Most big sites have a large click gap, so most people leave before they get to what they wanted. This is a problem because it is usualy the case that only after the end user has located what they were loking for, will they consider checking out banner ads.

**(All of the previos is under the assumption that user is comming from one site to another that does not allow deep linking.)

  7. What AOL Should have done on ESR says Microsoft is right, for once · · Score: 1

If AOL realy wanted to mess with microsoft this was definently not the way to do it. A much more effective means would be refocusing their marketing to AOL users away from Microsoft. 12 million users is a large group of people to have influence over. This type of tatic is more subtle and effective. Not to mention almost imposible to prove in court.

  8. Yes Please, May I Have Another on New PowerBook G3 & the iBook · · Score: 1

I have been thinking about a thinkpad for some time now but it looks like that might change. This powerbook has everything I have always wanted in a notebook and then some. I can't wait to buy one!

  9. Prediction on Be Inc. IPO launched · · Score: 1

The stock is up 37%. That is amazing. I bet the same thing happens to RHAT when they begin to actively trade. I'm rolling all of my pennies for RHAT.
