Waterloo has the best or at least second best computer science, mathematics and engineering programs in Ontario. I'm not sure where you gathered your information. Maybe if you are talking about arts degrees, but that is not what Waterloo is known for. I also don't think that Hawkings is hankering to get a fine arts degree, either.
I think it's safe to say the FF7 story is catered to people that are roughly in their teenage years, and people outside of that demographic may not be as interested. If you played it as a teenager or a child, the story is engaging and draws you in. As you get older, you realize that the dialogue and plot is rather simplistic and the romantic overtones not so subtle.
It's not that everyone doesn't care about a game telling you a story, but the fact that the story is catered for a younger audience. I don't think Aeris getting stabbed in the heart makes a story involved or mature, either.
While it is great that there are algorithms that exist to suggest movies, or books to get...I would hardly consider it to be artificial intelligence. The ability to pick out keywords or genres is something that could have been done more than two decades ago.
MAKE Magazine has a number of different kits available for an adult. There is this kit which has basic components (LEDs, resistors, capacitors, etc.) There are also programmable controller board kits available if you wish to tackle something more challenging.
If you are looking to read up on the subject, a classic book would be The Art of Electronics. Even though it is becoming dated, a lot of the principles of electronics design are clearly laid out.
I am a student in the school of engineering at the University of Guelph, and I never suspected I would see a story about it on the front page of Slashdot. Although this university is known for it's strengths in agricultural sciences, our school of engineering is actually fairly decent. Coincidentally, one of the members of the team is my first year general engineering professor.
Also, in the first year of entering the Formula SAE race car competition, our team placed 35th overall in the autocross and beat out well known schools like MIT.
However people may think that this school is only for "Aggies", we have a great engineering school as well.
I only use my home theater for playing 90s FMV point and click games, so it works well for me.

It's the rocket launcher from Quake 3 Arena.
I find this amusing.
