Could you at least show the Dalai Lama some respect by spelling his name correctly? The guy has won a Nobel Peace Prize and I suspect you haven't. I suppose it hasn't occured to you that there might be a way of life that doesn't revolve around power and greed? You are only seeing Tibetan culture bounded by your own limited worldview. Never mind, at least you're happy with your self image. I'm not sure he would be so conceited.

My family and I have actually gone without a TV now for several years - the tipping point was when we came to the opinion that we could get better content from DVD and more recently from BitTorrent than from network TV. We got a flat screen display (iMac) and set up an arrangement where the couch faced the desk so we could easily accomodate both uses without shifting anything around. We'll start using iTunes as soon as there's anything there we want and I'm awaiting the rollout of the BBC iMP service with interest. If we got a bigger apartment then we'd simply get one of the larger displays which would be fine, and now we've made the switch I'm sure we'll never buy a TV again - in the unlikely event that we ever decide we do want to watch network TV then we'll get something small and cheap like the EyeTV adaptor. The point of relating my personal experience is to make the point that I think the key will be when people decide it is easier and cheaper to get better content off the internet than through network TV. I realise that we are somewhat the exception right now and it will take people generally to come to the same conclusions as we have about the content source before widespread media centre adoption happens. When the perception of source changes then there is nothing stopping the switch, but if network TV still retains a strong attraction then things are likely to stay as they are.

I'm British. The reason I picked the Rennaissance is because that was when the relative chaos of the middle ages ended and our much of our current worldview began to be established. But if you prefer we could use the ancient Greeks as a starting point - that still only takes us back 2500 years which is nowhere near 10000.

What extraordinary hubris. It may be news to you but we're not the first civilisation that has thought it would last forever, but we've only been going in the present form for maybe 500 years if you take the Rennaissance as a starting point. The ancient Egyptians did pretty well but even they only lasted for 3000, and remember things change a lot faster now then they did back then. In just 1000 years quite likely everyone will speak dialects of Chinese rather than English, let alone 9000 years after that.

I thought I might bring out some sort of thoughtless comment like this. Not that I really want to get into a dialogue with someone who is so mentally challenged, but that is exactly the point - there is no easy answer, and killing people in far away countries might satisfy people wanting to lash out for a quick fix, but is more than likely make things worse.
