Your argument conveniently leaves out the fact that many factory workers in third world countries were at one time independent farmers whose livelihoods were destroyed by WTO agreements that allowed the dumping of cheap GMO'd agricultural products in their markets thus destroying their livelihood.

You're a fucking idiot, and a racist to boot. I know a LOT of people in those third world countries you strive valiantly to protect, and most of them are children of the slums where their parents moved to find work, not because of GM food, but because they wanted a better life for their children. You support the permanent cycle of poverty in the third world, you want them to stay poor, and all of the wealth to stay in your happy little first world paradise.

Under this arrangement victims of U.S. multinational corporations and would have a public forum to speak of the abuses they suffered at the hands of factories subcontracted to U.S. multinationals, in addition victims of U.S. war crimes such as the innumerable bombings of civilians in Iraq would also be given an opportunity to speak and to confront those responsible for their suffering

Well for one thing its quite difficult to design an explosive device that will kill hundreds of people from zero altitude. For the best results you need to have something like a claymore, that fires lots off large ball bearings in all directions, and even they are not, as a general rule, three dimensional devices, or even 360 degrees. In a packed stadium, the bodies closest to the blast will absorb most of the force of the blast, not unlike letting off a bomb underwater. A hopper, airburst explosive, will have by far the most casualties, and they are never small or easy to conceal.

Also you have the fact that dying in an airplane is possibly the single worst way to go. You're at 10,000 feet, the plane breaks up or get fatally damaged, you have a good two or three minutes to contemplate your fate while you plummet to the earth, given lateral velocity. Of course with the freezing cold in the upper atmosphere, its not unlikely you will hit sea level as a block of frozen ice, if you don't asphyxiate first. There really are few worse ways to die than in a plane crash => terror.

However the main reason is that the people responsible for these attacks just aren't that smart. It worked once, so they will try it again and again with endless variations on the theme. Not to be flamebait-ey or anything, but these attacks are another reason Islam needs to be permanently eradicated. I would take a page from the Russians' books; if terrorists execute hostages, execute the families of these terrorists. If it were up to me, the hands of these faithful would be cut from their arms, and they could eat from the trough like the pigs they refuse to eat for the rest of their as-long-as-I-could-prolong-them lives.

Just a couple of points here, Phil Knight is not responsible for the government or economy of third world countries like Vietnam. Taking advantage of a situation which increases his company's profits is not "evil", its his function. Also, remember you can do a great deal more with a dollar in Vietnam than you can just about anywhere else. Yes, maybe they aren't buying big american cars and fifty two inch plasma TVs, but they are doing okay, and if you ask them, you can be guaranteed they'd rather have those jobs than not. Your beef should be with their governments for not re-investing their taxes into infrastructure and education and improving the lot of the normal people.

    1. Economics is predicated on the idea of infinite expansion and in fact it's necessary for the economy to function. Clearly this is a fallacy because infinite expansion is not possible on a finite planet.

Who glued your feet to the floor? We're not trapped on a finite planet, and the universe as far as I know isn't a finite proposition.

    3. Pure capitalism leads to monopolies which destroy the competition that Adam Smith's self organizing principles of economics are based on.

There can only be monopolies where there is a high barrier to entry. One of the great things about technology is it lowers barriers to entry all across the board.

Nope it is not evidence. Maybe there is something we don't know about stopping interstellar travel. Maybe there was a giant war in this part of the universe a few hundred thousand years ago. Maybe someone did pick up our signals and is chugging merrily towards us at .9c from a distance of 200 light years. Even if a single race did explore the galaxy, there are a myriad of reasons why they would not settle every single system, perhaps they only cherry picked the ones that would be of use to them, perhaps this system wasn't of use to them the last time they were around 10 million years ago. Maybe a hundred thousand different things. Which leaves Fermi without a solid evidential leg to stand on, and missing a large amount of potential possibilities from his conjectures. Life isn't an unthinking virus. Starfaring life would have motivations.

Actually we have zero evidence either way. You link to the fermi paradox, which is not a paradox, nor is it an acceptable theory, and at the end of the day, scarcely reaches the level of idle canteen chatter. To say that the elements in the "paradox" are not the whole story would qualify as the understatement of the decade.

Heres a couple of madcap theories:

    1. They aren't using radio, in much the same way as we aren't using the pony express. I mean I hear a lot of people talking about picking up radio waves from similar civilisations to our own, or aliens somehow differentiating our planet's radio emissions from that of the sun. Don't make me laugh. TERAWATT LASERS directly aimed at alien worlds would have an awfully hard time being picked up and any meaningful informtaion gleaned from them. However, maybe one day soon some scientist is going to tune in a new device to alien transmissions.

    2. We already went to space. Now bear with me, not us, but an earlier intelligent race on earth. They went to space, found other alien races, fought them, and got their asses kicked back down to the level of algae. There are several mass extinctions in earth's history, none of which are adequately explained. These other alien races might likewise have been nuked out of existence. But where, you ask are the artifacts? Well what happens in an interstellar war when you get the liebenshiznit kicked out of you, maybe everything is reduced to pulp?

    3. There are no aliens. For my money, this is the best possible outcome, we have the essentially unlimited resources of the entire universe to play with. This means an end to war and a golden age, yes please, I'll take two.

    4. 95% of the energy and mass of the universe is missing... Dyson spheres anyone?
