Don't universities get government subsidies of anykind?

Do students get a choice to not pay for services they don't use? If not, that sounds to me like the college is stuffing in services they know most students won't use, and forcing them to pay for those. Essentially most students would be subsidising a handful that use the local telephone service. Most students that don't want or call out computer support are having to pay for the few that do. Most students are paying for the IT Staff that would otherwise be redundant if they didn't make themselves look busy by "support" they provide to the handful of students that call for it.

Seems unfair to the majority of the students to me...

I don't use ubuntu, I use arch (which almost any gnu/linux user will tell you is a lot more difficult to set up than ubuntu.)

In Arch, this is how you install software: In a console ass root you type:

    pacman -S package-name

    Thats it!

I can't for a second believe it is any more difficult in ubuntu. When I used to use fedora, I just used to use the GUI.

This also automatically checks for updates for all your installed software. Unlike windows where you have a whole bunch of programs checking for updates when they start, or worse - when windows starts, or even worse - via a permanently running service.

Check the difference between installing Gimp in ubuntu or any other mainstream distribution, versus windows. Hell try Gimp in these versus any other photo software in windows. See which takes less user intervention.

Someone does need to do something about the state of the RIAA/MPAA controlled arena of DVDs and crippled music though. I don't think DVDs is a problem for a "non-computer" person. None of the people who ask me for computer help watch DVDs on their computers. But, most of them do use ipods. But I don't see that as a real linux issue. Music needs to be free of limitations anyway!

Number of brides and number of virgins after death is written nowhere in islamic texts. These are what those with an agenda use to hire poor deprived kids into killing themselves for no reason, and what the western media uses to demonise a quarter of the worlds population. People such as yourself seem to buy into those factoids quite easily.

And where did you get this information? You studied another religion to find out what it was about and how people follow it, or was it just from a discussion between you and your klan buddies while driving around in a pick-up truck looking for a guy in a turban or a girl in a headscarf to lynch?

They do have simultaneous control of computers. The ICE system in fly emirates pauses everytime they make an anouncement. And it crashes too. don't know what OS they use. But it's really cool, you can play games against other passangers.

I know they think they are covered by the fact that the programmes have already been aired on TV, but the cost of creating the iplayer is coming from license fee payers. Now intentionally leaving out a cross section of fee payers is simply wrong. And they'd been using RealPlayer just fine until whats his name from microsoft took over at their online media wing. I don't want to be paying them to develop a product that I will never be using.
