Screw space, when are they going to break out the gutterbot to clean up all the crap in the neighborhood, keep rat population down, make sure every car on the street has the proper air pressure, and return stray pets.

Maybe I'm crazy but cleaning up space is alot like keeping an impeccible front lawn and living in 3 feet of trash.

How about that POST beep? Hey dummy I pushed the button I know you're powering up.

That fan on the back, when will PC manufacturers make a machine for my ultra senstive bat ears? We must think of some PC catchphrase for this, Autonomous Audible Attack Syndrome anyone? "I'd love to see Stereolab tonight but my AAS is acting up."

The sounds web pages make. Why would I want to hear some Don Henley song, let alone in crappy MIDI synth form.

ICQ foghorn, just in case a tanker is about to crash into my apartment as I decide to chat with other anti-social types.

Where does Jamie get this prejudice from? Is a brand label from a company I know to be fairly ethical so bad, especially considering that this lander may not be possible without them. Live video from the moon, wow this is very exciting.

Horrendus? The lander is just about the finest looking space vehicle I've seen in a long time, especially with its retro 50's styling.

The less people who think space if just for elitist academics and big government the better off we are. Most /. readers have no patience with crass-commercialism like the inflated prices of cheap goods *cough* Stabucks, but this is a venture that will be beneficial to consumers and has nothing to do with shameless marketing and shoddy products, they aren't planning on projecting commercials down to Earth.

Whatver lands on the moon will have some symbol on it, be it a NASA globe or a radioshack R, just because MS is evil doesn't mean you should be projecting your ignorant prejudice on this product.

Why do politicians rally over laws like COPPA but do almost nothing for consumer rights? Sure helping the kids is nice, but those kids are going to grow up and deal with this crap on an adult level. Where's the FTC then?

What really gets me is that this kind of legislation isn't passed because politicians really care anything about privacy its passed because "Fighting for children's rights" looks so good for next election's commercials.

Considering most consumers mostly use a browser and its plugins its has the utmost importance especially considering its the only way most people experience the Internet.

Maybe no one will be able to write another browser if MS's embrace, extend, and extinguish strategy keeps working for HTML.

As for being 'stupid' to focus on, if you bothered to watch the case you'd see that MS's muscling of the OEM's to keep from offering Netscape is part of the reason why they are an abusive monopoly.

  14. Linux: Geeks and Servers on MacOS In A World w/ 2 Microsofts · · Score: 2

Like someone already posted "Bias? On slashdot?!"

I would much prefer a 50% MacOS/50% Windows home market with an almost non-existant Linux, for the sake of competition compared to the 90%Windows/9%Mac/1%Linux (or whatever the real stats are) with the false hope that Linux is a Windows-killer. Well it isn't and it may never be.

What the author does get right in this article, and it isn't much, is that the breakup of MS will probably allow a very popular OS to get a real footing in the Intel home PC market and the Mac looks like a real contender. He also makes the simple realization that Linux is not ready, if it ever will be, for entry-level home PC buyers. Maybe when, say, trying to change screen resolution can be done by an amatuer without hosing the entire system is possible I might jump on the Linux for everyone bandwagon.

Maybe in a couple years the majority of posts will be about how much more evil Apple and Jobs are compared to not-such-a-bad-guy Gates.

Yeah its real fun to poke fun at crass commercialism, Hollywood, and Scientologists but the real issue is that Sci-Fi simply doesn't translate well to the big screen. How many watchable American sci-fi live-action movies are there out there? Maybe 15-20 at most in the history of film-making. The rest suffer from studio compromises trying to keep the lowest-common denominator entertained and not confused. People who are fond of wearing corporate trademarks on T-shirts win and Napster keeps its "hands-off" image.

Exactly where does using slashdot.org make proper use of TLDs suddenly so wrong?

Using .net .org. .com .edu properly is a great idea regardless of what sites you post to. Trying to create hypocrisy where there is none isn't very convincing even when you ignore that slashdot now owns both .org and .com and it started as a non-profit.

Its also fitting to mention the grammer of the original poster when your post is little more than a collection of rhetorical questions and run on sentances. If you think the OP was inarticulate you should re-read your own posts.

How about commenting on the issue instead of the poster and the moderators for a change.

  20. Geez, be creative for once on Barbie Demands A Domain · · Score: 2

Isn't the only reason the word Barbie is such a strong reference for women because of the poplularity of that stupid toy? Or maybe you're using the word Barbie as in the famous Nazi butcher? What are you planning on doing for HTML just lift it from the mattel site?

Its one thing to have a legitimate trademark issue, its another to demand that so-and-so evil corporation is taking your rights, especially in a country where the trademark holder is obligated to defend every violation thats brought to its attention.

Considering these facts, the best thing you could do is use a new non-sense word or simply words that aren't used by a big company who has had a history of defending their trademark.

You're only setting yourself up for a fall and even if mattel didn't care, once its brought to their attention they have to do something about it. Blaming Mattel for the law isn't going to get you anywhere, well except slashdot.

I think the main reasons people don't turn ivory into the fur industry is because:

    1. Elephants are expensive to aquire.

    2. They don't breed quickly nor do they mature quickly.

    3. The amount of feed and pens sizeable enough to hold a community of elephants is really expensive.

    4. To get all the ivory off an animal you have to kill it, no resale value/donate to reservations PR value.

Take these into consideration with the current price of ivory and you'll find that it simply isn't cost efficient. To have a nice shiny carved ivory knife handle you need to have poachers ready to slay elephants in the wild into near extiction as they have done and are still trying to do. That is cost-efficient.
