  1. Great! Go China and Sun! on Sun Announces Linux Deal With Chinese Government · · Score: 0, Offtopic

It's refreshing to see a government be "open minded", if that term can be applied to an organization. China seems to have its act together on so many issues that Europe and the US struggle with. China's embracing of open source is just one example, and now their partnership with Sun strengthens that commitment. I hope Europe and the US will open the minds and their eyes and start to take a good hard look at their economic, social, and government models. They have a lot to learn from China.

Hey dumbass, why don't YOU RTFA. If you did, you'd see that the music industry is trying to sue an ISP's employees because some of their customers are illegally sharing music. The RIAA has already tried suing clueless grandmothers in the US, and this appears to be a similar type of situation.

This is marked as "+1, Insightful" ??? How about "-5, Ignorant". Sometimes I get the feeling that Slashdot readers forget that the whole world doesn't think like them, or reads Slashdot for that matter. It's easy to see how a person reading Slashdot everyday might believe that the end is nigh for Microsoft. After all, Slashdot features stories on a daily basis about someone, somewhere choosing open source over Microsoft. But my guess is there's lots of stories about people choosing Microsoft over open source too. Microsoft's stock price will tank when they see a huge drop in profits. Given all the negative press about Microsoft lately, you might think that will occur soon. But MS's last quarter profits were over $2.6B, which is $600M more than the same quarter last year. Compare that to Apple, who made around $40M last quarter, Mandrake, who is bankrupt, and RedHat and SUSE who are barely making money. Sounds like MS is actually doing things right from a business perspective, while the lauded companies of Slashdot are have continual problems. Whose stocks do you think will tank first.

Pardon me, but do you actually know what you're talking about? Or are you just making spurious claims based your opinion of Apple? Have you done the research to show that the fans Apple uses are different than the "undersized, underpowered, cheap fans being pushed to their limits" in PCs? Did you use the knowledge you gained in your engineering classes to determine that G5s have a "properly engineered case" or did you just assume that because the cases look pretty and the G5s don't make a lot of noise? I'm not saying that any of the above statements are wrong, but I am calling their validity into question.

I have a story... Back in my undergrad days, I happened upon a game called Everquest (maybe you've heard of it). To keep the story short, I don't remember much of my sophomore year. I got kicked out, and allowed reentrance only upon agreeing to seeing a school counseler once a week for a year. I pretty much ended up having to stay away from computers altogether to break my obvious addiction. Now flashforward to March of this year. I had just purchased a Motorola T720 cell phone, which can play games that you can download from Verizon. I decided to see what games were available, and low and behold... Sony had released a version of Everquest for cell phones! I couldn't help downloading it. It was everybit as addictive as the PC game, but fortunately much smaller, and the online play sucks. Still, I was taking off work early quite often this week. Gaming addiction is a strange thing. My counseler believed my addiction may have actually stemmed from my being uncircumcised, and kids at school making fun of me relentlessly. I thought that I had gotten over it, but the brain works in mysterious ways. Apparently, I was trying to make myself happy by playing video games. The chemicals induced in the brain in such a state are similar to those in cocaine.

  17. StarOffice 7 on PHP Usage in the Enterprise · · Score: -1, Offtopic

Hi! It sounds like StarOffice 7 is off the hook. Does anyone know where I can download it for free (i.e. as an unofficial "trial" version)? Before I buy it, I'd like to try it. Reason: Reviews of open-source software are usually strongly biased. How do I know if StarOffice is really good? Sure it might be the cream of the crop when it comes to open source, but how does it compare to real applications, like MS Office? That's why I'd like to download it for free first. Kazaa? BitTorrent? AIM? Anyone?
