actual people on the site I see in the flesh at least once a year is probably less than 25...

No but I wouldn't expect a company to indefinitely support a compatibility module for a technology that they haven't actively developed for over 2 decades. I don't hear anyone complaining in 2016 that OS X won't natively run Mac OS 7.1 applications from the early 90s.

    DOSBox?

Microsoft stopped shipping MSDOS (via Windows Millennium Edition) a long time ago. If you've had 15 years to transition off DOS and Win16 applications that worked only via a compatibility mode of XP then I don't think you can blame MS for not giving your customers ample time to update.

It was a Google employee whose company supplied computer was designed by the company themselves. He probably copped some flack from his manager for destroying a thousand dollar piece of hardware. But equally the QA team may cop bigger flack for not testing this scenario.

Wait for the 2016 model correcting this problem. :)

The surprising thing in all of this is a lack of regulation.

Surely there ought to be a body like the FCC that issues a certification for electrical components sold by a major American online retailer like Amazon before these things even get listed.

    Absolutely.

Some organisations I've worked at with hundreds of employees on site means big savings if they switch. And they don't necessarily own said depreciating hardware assets in the first place but instead lease the desktops. e.g I worked at one place for 2 years and had 3 workstations in that time.

$3/month/desktop might not sound like much but let's say you have 300 desktops on a 24 month lease - that's a $1/4million off your power bills.

Certain processors are crippled to only allow 1 or 2GB of RAM, thus allowing MS to segment the market on licensing.
