You would still want some form of error checking to make sure the you got all the right data. I would hate to download somehting only to have a corrupt file.
I think the big problem will be in the assembly and disassembly. Instead of the bottle neck being on the network, it will be on yoru box slowing everything else down.
I really don't trust this. I would hope the use integer math. Otherwise, you can end up with some problems due to the fact that you can't represent some numbers IEEE floating point notation (which a lot of computers use to store decimal numbers).
I don't see this taking off. There is too much possibility to mess up.
We need to get Linux up to speed to meet the bare minimum of user requirements. Then we need to market it. Slogan like "You want to create you own cd with just songs you like... Well, you can't on the latest Microsoft Operating System because the have DRM (and a patent on it too!), but can because we can't do DRM because Microsoft has a patent on the technology!"
This could be a great opportunity for other Operating Systems! You know we'll have fun with the slogans the marketers come up with to sell the product!
Even if you don't hook up surround sound speakers, moviing the computer into a family room would still be a good idea. Those people who complain about kids surfing to adult sites can be watching (even if it is an occasional glance away from the tv) what there kids are doing. Then maybe the story I heard earlier today about a third grader trading adult pictures for pokemon stuff wouldn't happen.
If you can play files burnered on a cd-player, does this mean the RIAA will get involved? Maybe they'll start screaming piracy concerns and persuade the dvd makes to avoid the situation or face a lawsuit.
I don't think he has a clue about what he was talking about. He talks about LOTR as if it copied these movies...such as Harry Potter "And anyone who wants a replay of the troll attack from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone will find one here". Too bad Harry potter is a book borrowing from all kinds of myths and mythologies. Then there is the small problem of the book being written some 50 years ago. I hate critics who are ignorant of the sources of a movie.
Check your local theater. They may be selling tickets already. I have mine already for opennign night! Come 6:30 pm I will be in front of the gaint screen! I can't wait till 12/19/2001!!
Even people without addictive personalities can get addicted to games. For me the addiction was Moria, Angband, CivII, and I think Star Craft. I ended my addiction by stop playing the games.
I have hear talk radio shows about this and have heard all types of people call in to complain about their gaming addiction--even cops.
Now, to figure out a safe withdrawl from my slashdot addiction.:)
Of course, you are looking over some other real facts. Facts like Microsoft integrating IE into the OS. I was running Netscape at the time. It loaded extremely quick. Then I had to load IE because Visual Studio required it. After that Netscape was slower than ever.
Then there is the fact that they rarely give other companies who they consider to a competitor the information about a new version of the OS (or other such information) in a timely manner. They purposefully withhold it until their products are out!
Joel Spolsky is just a another Microserf. You can read it in the way he talks. He talks as if Microsoft has never done anything wrong when it comes to other companies. It not their fault Company A ran into Wall B they built.
Joel Spolsky's knowledge is forever wasted because he still lives in his Microserf world. It is too bad.
These people didn't exactly do anything new here. They just put together a bunch of old ideas. I hate the idea of software patents. Software patents should be outlowed!
Historically, Windows "borrow" from Unix a lot! Especially bsd style stuff. In reality, this seems to keep up the current trend. I like the idea. Get people used to Unix on a platform they like and feel comfortable with.
Eventually you might even be able to replace parts of Microsoft's OSes with more stable stuff from the Unix world.
My main concern is what about foreign (non-earth based) microrganisms? Whose to say that there aren't any on the moon in some type of stasis that got there from the many impacts on the moon? The more stuff we bring down to Earth from space, the more chances get higher that something like this can happen. There may not be life on the surface, but that doesn't eliminate life being in stasis in the ground of the moon. I hope these companies take the right precautions because we all know how companies like to cut corners!
I agree with you. I feel Stallman's problem lies in the fact that he is focused on the end goal. He lost track of the pathway that leads to that goal. Like him, I like the ability to look at, and modify if desired, the way a program, or group of programs, work. I also realize not everyone will agree with me, or see all the benefits of such an approach. As such, I think that there will need to be a middle ground for a while where free software co-exhists with it not-so-free counterpart. I see an entire system using free software as a goal with many steps leading to it. I think we need to focus on the small battles while keeping our minds o the final goal. I mean really, who ever heard of winning a war without first accomplishing smaller steps?
I didn't think you could selectiviely inforce a patent. IANAL, but I thought you had to enforce it completely (by reach and agreement with all parties whether or not they pay you anything is irelevant) or you lose your rights to the enforce it. Let's sum up some of the facts.
1. They filled the patent in 1976, and it was granted in 1989.
2. They have not sued anyone about this patent till now. The fact they didn't know they had it is irrelevant, they filed for it. Thus, should should have at least kept track of it's status. They really have no claim when they say they just found out the have the patent. It's been 12 years since the patent was granted, and about 25 since they filed for it.
3. They are only sueing Prodigy, and not MSN, aol, et. al. They are selectively inforcing this patent. Not to mention they are sueing all ISPs, nor are they enforcing it on an individual user or a corporate basis. I am ignoring the fact that sueing on an individual basis all personal, corporate, et. al. websites is stupid--since when has a company not done somethine stupid?
I really don't think they have much of a case. It's been about 25 years since they filled this and the internet, and especially the world wide web, has taken off since then. It really took off in the early 1990s. They didn't enforce their patent back then, so I don't think they should have the right to do so now. As the saying goes, "you snooze, you lose!". I think British Telecom needs to find another way to squeeze more money into there bottomline.
Actually, you are confusing the free software movement with Open Source. There is a difference. Stallman start the free software movement, but Open Source has it's roots in the creation of Unix itself (this is the reason there is BSD style Unix and System V style Unix). The original source code to Unix was made availble to the public, and evently Berkley got their hands on it and changed it to fit there needs, itches, and likings. It is from this communities trading of source code that open source sprang.
This by the way predate Bill Gate's involvement by about three years, and you could go back prior to Unix & the C language.
I have never combined languages (except when using web stuff. I would be interested in the hows, whens, whys, etc of it. Are there any good book people can recomend?
Seriously, we just found the answer to storing some of our Nuclear Waste. We'll store it in our bodies. Nevermind it stays in the body -- even after it has done its job, and there is no way to insure that the right cell will be targeted!
I think I will stick to the other methods like Kemo and seed impants if I ever get cancer.
Why not soul food? Why not Italian American (there are some differences)? Etc. I think the chose Iron chef American becuase even stuff that comes from other countries usually get "Americanized" in some way. There are several different "flavors" of American food (such as Soul Food, Cajun, etc.).
Besides, it's the American version, and how can it be the American version without them calling a chef the Iron chef American?
I actually looked at the pictures he provided. He wrote fragile in English. If he was going to write it at all, he might have wanted to try at least one other language when going from one country to another. Personally, I would have move it myself.
I agree with you. I would move my computer stuff myself, or at the minimum have someone I know and trust move it for me. I am a computer junkee. I wouldn't be able to survive without my computer.
You would still want some form of error checking to make sure the you got all the right data. I would hate to download somehting only to have a corrupt file.

Well, I can dream can't I?
Is there an open standard choice? All I know of are the three standard (Apple, Real, & MS). I would prefer an open standard on dvd players.
I don't think he has a clue about what he was talking about. I wasn't addicted, but I played them a lot for a while.
Not really. I could stop, and did. I almost never play games anymore, and when I do, it is only for a half hour at most.
That is the first time I have heard of that happening. Usually, the girlfriend/wife threatens to leave you over the gaming addiction.
Even people without addictive personalities can get addicted to games. For me the addiction was Moria, Angband, CivII, and I think Star Craft. I ended my addiction by stop playing the games. :)

Not to mention, the next time a terrorist wants to do some harm, they can use this wonderful service!
