  1. How do I get in on the action? on AOL 5 Gets $8 Billion Class Action Suit · · Score: 1

OK, so maybe I don't use AOL, but I know plenty of people who do... how do they take part in this lawsuit?

AOL has clearly stated it's goal is to be the one portal to the internet, this kind of software actually does make it hard install the software for a competing ISP, there is basis in fact, and whether it was by design or thru negligence, this would be monopoly needs to be slapped on the hand until it starts to play nice. </run on sentence>

  2. Right! Somone should moderate your comment up! on Microsoft looking for FreeBSD Skills · · Score: 1

Everyone seems to forget that hotmail wasn't always owned by microsoft. It's amusing that they weren't willing or able to port it to NT, but it's hardly a sign that redmond will implement any *nix solutions in the future.

  3. Churn and Burn and Learn! on Beginning Linux Programming, 2nd Edition · · Score: 1

This is the philosophy that makes open source so good. Linux would not be worth it's salt if it didn't constantly evolve and develop. I'm still running Redhat 5.1 servers (I was not forced to upgrade) but I'm sure glad 6.0 is out, where the hell is 7.0?? The point is you can download your own Redhat, Debian, whatever for free. This speed of development is refreshing compared to Microsoft's 5 year product cycle.

Books come out with new editions. Deal with it. Paying 40$ for a book every once in a while is nothing like paying 100$ per client for every machine on your network and 1000$ for every server. This system produces great documentation for software and I will never bitch about having to drop forty damn dollars every two weeks for excellent information.

Thank you O'reilly, and thanks to all the great open source authors.

  4. NT's boot loader is up to the task! on All of the Win32 Operating Systems on a Single Box? · · Score: 1

I run Win311, Win95, and Winnt Workstation 4.0 all on a single partition in a classroom environment. The trick is to install NT last and use a utility called bootpart (written by Gilles Vollant) to make configuring the NT bootloader a piece of cake. You can find it here:

    http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gvollan t/bootpart.htm

I expect you will have a problem with Win95 and Win98 playing nice... msdos.sys, config.sys, autoexec.bat, and some other win95 root files will be replaced by the 98 install. I suggest installing 98 on a separate partitition. (In fact you need to install all three on separate partitions unless you don't mind sharing the "Program Files" folder) Before you run the 98 install use fdisk to change the partition to active ... that way the Win98 install will place the root files in that partition. You can also attempt to use bootpart to save a boot image for each os... you can actually do this many different ways, the key is to use bootpart, it's an invaluable tool.

Why do you need all of these os's on one machine? Testing? Training? Anyway I'd really be interested to see how you do it, and if you need any help, email:

  5. Reminds me of domain-name snatchers... on Norwegian Company Claims to have Patented e-Commerce · · Score: 1

This whole thing reminds me of the rush to run out and register domain names you will never use in case some one else does. Greed. Stupidity. These values should have penalties in a mature society.

  6. Buy a crappier old thing? on Simple Terminals w/ Small Footprints? · · Score: 1

I'd suggest the ultimate small footprint terminal, a Mac Plus. They have a tiny footprint, built in monitor and you can get nice freeware terminal emulation programs on the net. The price: 20$-30$ US. The drawback is these machines have no hardrive... that's why I like to snack on the Mac SE, which usually runs 30$-40$.
If you want a 486 box w/no keyboard or monitor I will send you one if you are willing to pay S&H.
