  1. Bring on the heatpipes! on Shuttle XPC Linux Network Appliance · · Score: 4, Interesting

How long will it take until they start making these things with heatpipes and large heatsinks and without fans?

I'd much rather have a passively cooled box with a transmeta crusoe/efficeon or VIA C3 and a PVR350 card, than a box that can do software encoding+decoding and needs lots of fans.

I am way over 20, so I guess you are right that he will wax me. I'm just talking from experience; it's the arrogant little kids that have the best reflexes. Of course it also depends on the type of game if reflexes are really important.

... give up hope of ever being at the top. The (reduced) reflexes will make sure there will always be people faster/more accurate than you are.

Instead aim to avoid the last place. On most servers there are at least some n00bz playing, so try finishing ahead of them. Over time you will start recognizing nicknames and you'll know how good they are. You'll know when you get killed if it was a miracle you survived that long against that particular player.

In some games it pays off to focus on other things than simple frags. In Capture the Flag style games it is often very important to have a reliable defender of the base that provides the attackers with supplies when they return to base to rearm. You may not be the l33test guy on the block with a >=1.0 kill/shot ratio, but you can still be valuable to the team.

And join a clan once you've got some skills, there's nothing more fun than a clan war (well, nothing involving shooting at other people anyway).

    1. I actually am waiting for portage to calculate dependencies on my P4 3G. The reason is that I first check what would be emerged, before I actually have it done. I don't mind the build taking a long time because I'm not waiting for it to complete, I just run it during the night.

And as far as language choices are concerned, somebody I know has made an alternative to portage in perl and already it was a *LOT* faster in calculating dependencies. I'm not saying I know why, I'm just stating a fact.

    2. There are times when I have to do a reinstall and I would like to do an automated one. The Gentoo Linux Install Script is hopefully going to fill that void.

Whatever happened to the idea of tarpits to stop spam? I haven't found anything about tarpits being a bad idea, but they don't seem to be in widespread use.
