  1. A few Kilograms... on The Law of Disassembly · · Score: 1

A few Kilograms of Radioactive waste is more dangerous than a few kilograms of concentrated chemical waste. This is because besides being radioactive, radioactive waste is very toxic chemically. Of course for your comparison you should have been been comparing a few kilograms of radioactive waste to a few million tons of concentrated chemicals since it doesn't take much uranium to produce a lot of power.

  2. Speaking of Nuclear Energy... on The Law of Disassembly · · Score: 2, Interesting

We have ling since developed the capacity to reprocess and dispose of nuclear waste. And by dispose it of I don't just mean bury it in the ground. Breeder reactors and processing facilities that can turn high level radioactive waste into fissionable material and useful radioisotopes have been around for more than a decade. The DOE site at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratories alone could reprocess all the nuclear waste generated in the US, and well as by our NAVY. It is only the mindless fear of nuclear proliferation that prevents us from using it to do so.

Why would a moon base need to have a scientific purpose? I thought it was meant as a piece of space infrastructure. The idea is that you can use it to build things on the moon, out of raw materials extracted and refined there. That way you only have to boost them off of the moon rather than off of the earth.

It's just that no matter how many problems you solve, more always become apparent. I don't think you need to choose one or the other, exploration or humanity. In reality, exploration is just another way we try to better ourselves and our way of life.

On top of that, they landed using ancient computers with miniscule amounts of power. It's a maricle they landed at all.

That is true, but if we never repay our loans we essentially get "bad credit" for future loans (for example, people are less willing to buy bonds and so fourth...). Not that it's really an issue since the deficit is so small compared to how much the government takes in anyway.

Speaking of the Bush deficit, 1 trillion dollars split 260 million ways is only about $4000. I don't know if that really warrents all the fuss. Besides once we're in an upturn economy again, we won't even need to raise taxes to make up the deficit. The government will just take in more money, like it did in the 90's. I hardly think that it would have been a good idea to raise taxes during an economic downturn to make up for the deficit. As my economics professor once said, "the last presidint who tried to balance the budjet during a recession was Hover". (that was at the beginning of the great depression)

What you read on CNN regarding the reasons behind the Hubble's loss is not entirely accurate. The decision to stop matinance on the Hubble is a resule of SAFETY concerns with the space shuttle, NOT money concerns. The official NASA statement said that they wanted to use the shuttle as little as possible, and that all future missions should be to the ISS so that they can prevent another event like the Columbia from happening. This is a decision that is the result of the study done regarding the shuttle Columbuia, and likely would have been made regardless of any new space initiative. Recall that the the Hubble was going to be serviced last year, but that severcing will not likely ever happen now. Furhter, your assertion that the new space exploration vehicle will not fly on time is unfounded. The requirements for the space exploration vehicle do not call for the developments of any NEW thechnologies. The vehicle is to be designed an built using existing technologies. This removes most of the question marks from it's development schedule. Space vehicles such as the gemini capsule have been developed in less time.
