CDs are written from the center outward. The drive reads these business card CDs the same way you would read an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper with a few inches chopped off the bottom.

  4. Re:Color not necessary on Palm IIIc, IIIxe Released · · Score: 1

There's no way to argue that color is a necesity, but it is certainly a worthwhile addition. First of all, color can actually make the Palm more functional. Color coding allows you to fit more information into the same space, and it could be added to many Palm applications. Second, it's just nicer to look at, in my opinion. If the price were the same, I'm sure that that a vast majority would choose color over greyscale.

To fear that the Palm is going the way of WinCE is a major overreaction. WinCE failed because Microsoft tried to recreate the feel of Windows on a tiny PDA screen. The result, of course, was that the functionality fell short of what the Palm OS offered. WinCE was inferior even before color was added.

  7. Re:Linux Manual on The Linux Newbie Replies: WFM? · · Score: 1

A "Linux Manual" site is an excellent idea, but it would NEED to cover more than just terminal use and X. I'd like to see it consist of a getting-started guide of sorts, followed by an in-depth instructional/reference section.

The former would contain such things as:
    - basic terminal use, such as navigation, grep, output redirection with | or >, the find command (the find command can be VERY difficult to learn if not explained well)
    - using X
    - installing new software
    - basically everything that you should know before starting to use Linux, be it out of necessity or just to make life easier

    The latter portion would discuss:
    - sound configuration
    - dialup/PPP (this may be the #1 question asked in #linux on EFnet)
    - printing
    - all other specific areas that may not be necessary for every user

  8. Re:Missing the point... on Napster Being Sued by RIAA · · Score: 1

If it was that clear cut, Napster would have no case whatsoever. Comparing it to FTP or another such medium is more like comparing a hunting rifle to an assault rifle. The function is basically the same, but each is designed with a different purpose in mind.

To make matters even more complex, Napster can be used for both legal and illegal purposes, much the same way as the aforementioned assault rifle could be used either for self defense or to commit murder.

As I see it, there is nothing the RIAA can do unless they are able to prove that Napster was designed solely for pirating music.

  11. It's nice, but... on 3D Window Manager · · Score: 1

3Dwm seems to be a fairly novel idea, but there's no real use for it right now beyond being "cool" (remember text mode Quake?). If this kind of technology is ever to take hold, it needs to offer something more than 2D X, just as X offered something more than the console (which is way, WAY before my time using Linux :P). Once programs make use the 3rd dimension (instead of just being floating polygons in it), 3Dwm will have some practical value.
