This is probably a WinAPI issue. This has nothing to do with nVidia, ATI, Video Codecs (which would only affect cutscenes anyway...) or anything like that. This is almost certainly 100% caused by upgrades with the WinAPI and/or DirectX. Unfortunately for you, the best thing MS ever did was drop full compatibility with Win9x. Check the game vendor for updates or try it in DosBox or similar.

Interesting. I've only ever heard that phrase used in the incorrect "modern" form. Thanks for that one.

Regardless, the AC's comment is still incorrect as defining a meter in terms of seconds is not a fallacy. A second is defined by the time taken for a certain atom at a certain temp to vibrate a certain number of times. A meter is then defined as the distance light travels in a vacuum in a certain number of seconds. This is simply an A->B, B->C situation.

  3. Re:Not any more on Kilogram Reference Losing Weight · · Score: 2, Funny

This begs the question, as under the International System of Units, the second is currently defined as the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom. You forgot the question that is begged.

That works fine, provided you don't want any formatting. If you want formatting, you'll have to use HTML or PoT and use the entities. AFAIK, the only difference between PoT and HTML in slashcode is PoT inserts <br>s automatically.

  11. What impact? on Watermarking to Replace DRM? · · Score: 1

The only impact will be on the people who still buy the stuff; those who share it online won't have any problems. Impact? The only thing most consumers will care about is that they CAN rip the tracks to their PC, share them with their friends, load them onto network and USB devices, etc. The need to by pass the watermarking will now be pretty much relegated to the piracy groups.

Even if this doesn't prevent the piracy groups from doing their thing, at least it won't interfere with consumers fair use rights the way DRM does. There will be a few consumers who complain about damaged audio quality due to the watermark, but that really depends on how the file is marked. I'd rather see companies strive for the perfect watermark than the perfect DRM, that's for damn sure.

Moreover, it is more plausible that a comet could fertilize many star systems if it was knocked out of the orbit of various stars in its life-time. I think it's much more plausible that 1 comet could only fertilize 1 planet. In order for the life in the comet to survive on the planet, it needs a way to get safely to the surface. Riding inside the center of a comet while the exterior turns into a fireball while passing through the planet's atmosphere is one way. Breaking off in the comets tail and descending to the surface seems much less likely.

Though I agree that the comet need not have originated in our solar system.

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/do_higher_mp3_bit _rates_pay_off Yes, I believe that is the article I read. Good find. It seems it a) wasn't as long ago as I thought and b) wasn't quite the way I recalled it, but c) had the same conclusion I remember.

In a quiet room with mood lighting and kitschy Scandinavian furnishings, the participants put on a pair of Sennheiser HD 580 headphones that were attached to our test PC's Creative X-Fi soundcard. The participants listened to not only the three versions of their own track, but also the three tracks from each of the other participants, for a total of 12 tracks in all. Each participant was allowed to listen to each track as long as he or she could stand it, and was allowed to repeat portions of the track and do A/B testing with the other tracks. So it seems they listened on high quality headphones, not a varied amount of equipment as I had recalled.

Quite right. Maximum PC had an article about a year ago where they pitted 4 people (A teeny-bopper or two and at least 1 audiophile) in a "Guess the Source" contest. They had a selection of songs and played 4 versions of each ranging from 160kpbs mp3 up to flac and uncompress wave on various sound systems (iPod earbuds, expensive head phones, expensive stereo system, etc).

As I recall, nobody could really tell the more often than chance would predict. The audiophile did slightly better, but nothing to shake a stick at.

Adobe never stated that Flash 7 would be the last version available for Linux. Macromedia said that. Adobe didn't own Macromedia until after Flash 8 was released, as a matter of fact. Maybe they didn't, but Macromedia had stated they were skipping Flash 8 for Linux and stating somewhat publically in 2005that Flash 9 would be the next to support Linux. We didn't like that, but accepted it. At least it wasn't dead. When Adobe bought them, I seem to remember a statement that Adobe had killed the Flash 9 for Linux project. It was months later before I read on an Adobe blog that they were working on it after all. It could have just been speculation and hype ("OMG! They're not going to do another flash!!") that I'm recalling, and not actually anything real. Perhaps it never was canceled.

The very first version of flash Adobe released (flash 9) had an officially supported and VERY compatible, stable Linux port within months of the Windows release. Yeah. 9 months (Jan '07), after not having had an update to Flash since 2004 or so. Adobe or Macromedia (what's the difference, they're mostly the same employees/teams) there will still be sour grapes over this for quite a while.

I'm just as concerned with Flash10 support for non-Windows OSs as I am Silverlight support.
