Well, actually a degree is proof of:...
* Completion of narrowly defined assignments you will never see in a professional environment
I used to complain about the same stuff. Then I hit 3rd year. Holy shit. I have never understood the requirements for ANY assignment I have had. Everything is apparently made deliberately vague to help us in the real world. Too bad the real world doesnt give us jobs eh;)
What we need to do is get some shady smoke-filled back room deals to pre-install a Linux distribution on 50% of all desktops shipped. Then the problem will take care of itself! Pretty cool eh?
Compiling: Seriously, don't compile if you cannot figure this stuff out. With apt-get/yum/whatever there should be no need for you to do this. If its really a big issue for a lot of users, you should take it up with your distro. The author shouldnt need to bother if you can't figure it out. That should be your vendor's job (hint, hint, subscribe, pay, support)
If users like your grandma put pressure on the distros to support the more popular but currently unsupported packages, it gives them an economic reason to do the shit properly.
Maybe a user-oriented distro would be honoured (theoretically) if you would ask them to create an installation package for you. I don't know. I just know that I have realized that expecting the authors to deal with the intracacies of systems they have no access to is too much to ask.
Compiling is for people that want to alter the source, etc etc
Personally, when I need software to just run, I do not have too much pride to run apt-get. Shit, if you want, you can use it to compile it automagically! Conversely, when I actually am working with some source code, then I will obviously fudge around with tgzs or cvs
Just to add something (yes I did preview before:P)
The way he made me want to learn was by telling me was what he had learned (phd in astronomy from Yale or Stanford or something). We used to talk long after tutor hours were over about many topics such as philosophy, religion, math, etc etc. I only wish that others were as lucky as I was to have him.
PS: Yes I paid for the tutor sessions myself and no my family wasnt rich so I wasnt some stupid rich kid (I've seen enough of those in school)
I disagree with you on that point. When I was a kid, I was pretty crazy in class (although not as extreme as some of the given examles). I never saw the point of studying. Then when I hit the higher grades, I decided to get a tutor because I wanted to graduate. This tutor/teacher was a professional and HE made me want to learn.
Some kids just need a push. I would never be where I am today (university with 3.57/4.0 GPA) if it wasnt for him
I have about 7 applications open: Acroread, Kdevelop, Netscape 7.1, Limewire, Konqueror, K3b
Uhhh... What version of acroread are you smoking? My acroread just uses the X-windows toolkit and doesnt look at all like KDevelop or Netscape or Konqueror
I think your point and the point of the story is that old people and computers do not generally mix (which is retarded). What they shouldve said is ``Gnome for the technically incompetent''
If you had actually read the article, the real point is that Nautilus is no longer just a ``file manager'' and is moving to be a user friendly way to explore your desktop
This is the right step to take, as having the technically incompetent being able to actually use the system productively will do wonders for Linux on the desktop
This can be dangerous for Hollywood because it will generate a perception amoung the young that movies are something that you will grow out of
Too late... The last few movies I watched include Star Wars (all of 'em), Space balls and Beavis and Butthead do America.
So I already feel that the movies nowadays are oriented towards teenagers.
But then again, maybe I havent ``grown up'' myself.

With MS involved, I have a feeling that there is going to be a lot of ``embrace and extend'' beyond what goes on in Ballmers office.
Dude. You got too much time on your hands.
I think the parents advice above is very good. You may also want to check out my 30 billion books called ``How to get rich''.
Donald Trump.
PS: For those too lazy/cheap to read/buy my book, the last page says: ``Write a billion books''.
Thank you
Well it was meant to be a joke... Some people seem to be taking offense!
./ ID :)
Good for you for understanding mr 5 digit

The grandparent didnt RTFA (properly). Congratulations

Newsflash
Microsoft has no interest in being technologically advanced.
They just want the revenue. Unless theres a good business case behind making a bootable Windows OS, no way in friggin hell are they gonna do it
I dont respond to trolls.
Oh wait. I just did.
Very interesting. So interesting that I sought out this fact sheet
Perhaps what you meant to say is:
Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers!Whooooo... Cmon. C-c-c-c-cmon!
If you don't get it, thats ok too

It is the student's responsibility to learn.

But doesn't this seem a tad bit like Lego's Mindstorms products?
Translation: I didnt RTFA
Thank you. Thank you very much
I agree interface inconsistency is not a big deal. As long as you dont start putting menus at the bottom and status bars on the side
So that is how the jock with a criminology degree beat out the Harvard MBA for Trump's job last night. It is all so clear to me now.
You bastard, I haven't seen it yet
Thats probably the nicest cease-and-desist I've ever read. Most other ones are like ``Fuck you, pay me''

Their stupid Exchange connector broke down and he didn't get the pop-up for the meeting from Evolution. Should have used Outlook

Wow! And they even spelled guarantee wrong!

I would want mine to be an outline of goatse. That way, he would be known throughout ALL the world
This is a case in which being an AC would be better for you.
