    As the article in Salon said. Wonder how to pronounce SCO? It is not the 3 letters as in S-C-O but as the last syllable in fiaSCO. Priceless.

    Smartphone (with a capital S) is Microsoft's brandname for... smartphones (duh!). They've copyrighted the name, so that's what Howard means when he writes "first commercially available Smartphone".

    You make a good point, but taking Names (TM) that already has a meaning and copyright it is stealing from the commons.

    They steal the meaning that this name already have. There is nothng wrong with picking a name that helps you in the beginning you just need to undertand that what helps you now will hurt you later so take your pick.

    It like the Trademarking of the word Windows. WTF. This was picked percisely because it had a well definied and undertaood meaning. The name helped yuo in the beginning now you are stuck with something that is generic and should be allowed to be trademarked.

    Nothing wrong with Smartphone but as a trade mark give me a break. Maybe we need to rename Gnome or KDE SmartWindows.

    This question was posed at the recent press conference, and McBride said that the lawfirm were on a "Profit aligmnent" basis. Euphemism I guess for sharing the loot if they get any, in exchange for not being paid if they fail.

    Unless the EULA states that they can't be held responsible. Like Microsoft on the famous Timeline SQL Server Patent infringement.

    This point needs to be HAMMERED home, Closed Source is no better actually worse since you can't easyly remove the offending code.

    If whatever you have is not good enough maybe do as I. I use POPFile and then use the baysian filter inside Mozilla. PopFile has a feasture where you can hardcode recipient messages ID as Magnets, so you hardly ever have a false positive. I am running at 99+%. Truely excellent. PpFile takes 10 min or so to set-up. Training is a days or so.

    Perfectly legitimate memo as far as I can see. I fact it makes a very good point that FOOS is a previledge not a right. Priviledges comes with attachments and can be revoked. This memo only states that DoD will play by the rules.

    I think the FOOS community notably the ones (like me) that do not write code but tries to get FOOS into the corporations, increasingly need to stress the fact that it comes with strings attached and that the corporations need to make sure that those strings is being honored.

    How stupid is this proposal.

    We already have a universal system. Goes like this

    Country ID + Country Zip. Problem solved

    Every country has a two alphanumerice code and every country has a zip system. If the latter is not the case a new system is sure not going to solve that problem.

    More people need more farmland

    No they do not. They need to change the way they operate. US can feed the entire world with 2%-3% of population working on farms. Denmark (You know how small it is?) could in theory feed all of Europe using less than 350K people with no extra land being used.

    I do not mean to belittle world hunger, just think we need to go about fixing it differently.

    This is as stupid as building the Aswan dam.

    Destroyed irreplacable historic artifacts in exchange for more Farmland. Farmland, for crying out loud. As if the world need more Farmland.

    We need educated people not bloody peasants.

    Why do undeveloped nations think they need big ill thought throught project like this. Free the people and let them do the thinking and drive the economy.

    Well put, I couldn't agree more.

    Maybe there is a way around this. Normally when you trancact somethng like this you agree to forfeit any legal claims against the parties involved.

    However this does not apply to third parties hurt by SCO, so if we could find a credible third party willing to go to bat, we could get some of the money back plus hold the directors personally liable.

    My personal favorite would ba a class action suit led by ESR on behalf of all the developers.

    This would add up to real money and the developing "cost" of Linux would come out in the open.

    Having the court certify that the development effort of Linux has a value of $xB, will be worth a lot on PR terms.

    Best strategy is for IBM to make a public offer of $10M, state that they value to company around the same price that a prolonged court case would cost.

    Let a few rumour slip to the press that the $10M is the price they estimate the court case will cost and thet they think they will be unable to collect the expected Damages against SCO they court will impose.

    That would make their stock price crash to around $2 for a Capitalization of around $15M, then have a RedHat led consortium offer $20M or so, that will likely be accepted.

    IBM can then buy some of the SCO contracts from RH and a later date.

    That way there will be no impression left that IBM gave in to Blackmail.

    You are right in a general sense, but the beauty of the capitalist system is that every market niche will be filled.

    If there is enough people that wants or do not want something it will be provided.

    Case in point, Internet Banking. There is not much value Added that a Bank can do. Remember Gates' much maligned comment a few years ago (pre interenet if I remember) that banking will be reduces to a few lines of code. He was close to being right, except Banks didn't want that and rebelled.

    If there is a market for a Bank to fully support a FOOS solution, it will be provided. We could even do it ourselves thru a non profit organization, that bought the needed "Connection" services, like Credit card clearance, money transfer etc.

    Maybe it is actualy the 1.4rc1 build with only minor changes.
