I think that NPR offers a more well-rounded perspective that helps limit the bias factor. Of course there are situations that have me pulling out my hair and screaming even on NPR, but far fewer than some shit like FOX or NBC.

BTW... NPR has been covering this story (FCC deregulation) for weeks rather than the tiny comments of the last couple days that the rest have.

I keep hearing that, but i find nothing to back it up. The only explanation i can come up with is that those who make that assertion are so blinded by the ultra-conservative mass media that they can't tell the difference between super-liberal and just not ultra-conservative.

I have used the PIC16C7XX series from Microchip to do a number of useful things (it has 2 I/0 ports and a A/D converter) it really wouldn't be too hard to get one of these things to control some sort of robotics.

What you do is you write your program with the free software and simulate it. (All software is free along with the specs. and manual for the PIC) After you get it right, you burn it on a chip and boom you have a chip that will do what you programmed it to!

  15. Re:Question for physicists. on "Spooky" Quantum Data Encryption · · Score: 1

It must be remembered that this entanglement effect is a Quantum effect. The entanglement referred to is that of one wavefunction with another. So in essence you could do the same thing with two electrons as two photons you might would be measuring a different quantum number. It is about here however that your ideas seem to turn in to SciFi. You are however getting at why Einstien found this idea so "spooky." In physics, and in experimental science in general, it is generally assumed that you can isolate a variable from all other objects and study it. You don't think about the fact that you were bouncing a ball three years ago when you calculate it's parabolic trajectory today. The fact that these fundemental particles were somehow not isolated from each other even though they were outside of each other's light cones causes us to question the whole style of science. If everything is made of waves and everything interacts with everything else and it is entangled then how can we study anything in isolation ... and yet we do. Anyway this is a very interesting topic with philosophical overtones and the basis of Quantum Computing as well. If you are interested look into Bohmian Mechanics (an alternative to the traditional Copenhagen interpretation offered by Niels Bohr)

  17. Its not magnetic -> thats part of the benefit! on Advances in Artificial Muscles Using Plastic · · Score: 2

The reason that speakers nowadays use magnets is because its the easiest way to convert electrical energy into mechanical (vibrational, ie. sound) energy. The electrical signal passes through a coil that is in a magnetic field... this causes the coil to become magnetically charged and get attracted or repelled by the magnet, moving the cone (this happens at high frequency, causing a back and forward movement of the coil (which is attatched to the cone... which moves the air at that frequency ... which makes you hear the sound))!

Now... back to the plastics. If we could us a plastic to move a cone (or just itself) in response to an electrical current, then we eliminate the costly, heavy and bulky parts of a speaker (the coil and magnet). SO... yes this can be used to make potentially high quality speakers!

i wont even bother to comment on your "30Khz point" because it is completely illogical.. you would want it to vibrate at different rates, ranging from a few times a second to nearly 20000 times a second in order to cover all sounds that the human ear can hear.
